This is from Scholastic.com: "The deluxe edition includes an exclusive insert featuring near scale reproductions of Mary GrandPré's interior art, as well as a never-before-seen full-color frontispiece art on special paper.

The custom-designed slipcase is foil-stamped and contains a full-cloth case book that has been blind-stamped on front and back cover with foil stamping on the spine. Featuring art created especially for this edition by Mary GrandPré, the book includes full-color endpapers and a wraparound jacket."

We bought the HBP Deluxe version... and it's still encased in it's wrapping (which, I admit, just kills me sometimes - but Hubby used to work in collectibles and insists we're destroying the value if we take it out. So I've never actually seen it). Hoping the children can sell it and finance their retirement's in a coupla decades. Will do the same for this one as well. Guess it's one for each kid. Boy, they sure do have a nice Mom! :D

Is your husband CRAZY!! How can you look at all the artwork with the plastic on? Just slit it carefully and put it back when you're finished and he'll be none the wiser. I firmly believe books were made to be handled and loved.

As a longtime book collector AND dealer, I've found it important to remove the shrinkwrap for the following reasons:

1. shrinkwrapping is plastic shrunk using a heat gun, and over time, it may warp the book binding, however slightly.

2. you need to INSPECT the book for damages: missing pages, upside-down book signatures, blurred printing, etc. If the book is defective, the time to find out is when you have bought it and can get a replacement. When you're ready to give it away, trade it, or sell it, and discover that, for instance, you've got a copy with upside down pages, you've got something that you can't sell or give away.

3. to protect the dust jacket (the most fragile part of the book), use what the pro book dealers use -- a plastic cover that encases it. Brodart makes them and so does Gaylord; I think their web addresses are brodart.com and gaylord.com.
