Our book club is reading Angelica and will be meeting to discuss the book on August 3........I've read the first section so far about Constance....I see a theme of "the emasculation of men"....hope I spelled that right....any comments?

I wish we could hear your groups comments!

Could you say more about your theme? I was really overwhelmed by the intensity/emotional pressure of gender roles in the novel. Why on earth do these characters feel so trapped by this stuff?

SPOILER

I agree with you. Despite becoming sympathetic towards Joseph during the last two sections of the book, I do still think that theme applies throughout.

Gender roles were quite strict during the time period of the book, so I figured that all the stereotyping of men and women and their emotions was normal for the times.

Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.
