This thought popped into my mind after I finished the book --- Hey, that wasn't a ghost story after all!
Then, upon reflection, I realized it was indeed a ghost story. The characters of Constance, Joseph, and Angelica are all haunted by their pasts. Constance is haunted by her abuse at the hands of her father, Joseph is haunted by his perceived career failure, and Angelica is haunted by her father's death. Ghosts don't have to be apparitions floating in the night. They can live within our own minds.
