Why are so many people (including myself) unable to read .pdf files on the Nook Color? It's advertised that we can. I have software version 1.4.1. All I get when trying to open one (yes, I sideloaded them from my pc via Adobe Digital Editions) is:
"Complete action using: Quickoffice Lite or Reader. Neither works. When trying to open, it brings up:
"Error Dialog Sorry, cannot open this book"
I have contacted BN several times via phone and chat both. I have repeated all the same actions with them, followed their directions, done the same things with them that I've done on my own with attempting to read .pdf files. Only one rep told me there was a "software fix in the works" for the problem. Others I've talked/chatted with assure me "I'll make sure to write a note on this!" WHAT is going on? I see the issue all over these forums, with no answers.

I wonder whether the problem is not reading pdf files ~ the bundled software reads pdf files just fine for me ~ but reading pdf files that have digital rights management, like library pdf ebooks. That is, either Quickoffice unable to get past the DRM, ADE has a flaw in how it massages the DRM for Quickoffice, or ADE thinking its managing the DRM for the built in B&N ereader and the B&N DRM system instead of the bundled QuickOffice reader software.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) protected PDFs can not be read as PDFs by quickOffice or the native Nook PDF reader. Do these DRM/PDFs show up on your library as books?

I don't think it was a DRM protected file since it was a public domain ebook. Yes, it was present in the NC library, but just couldn't open it until I downloaded directly to NC. Thanks for your reply and kind attempt to help ![]()

Thanks much!
You're more than welcome, though I only set out possibilities and you're the one who recognized which one might be going on.
As far as why you put the book through ADE ... force of habit. We all do stuff like that, sooner or later. But as important as the ADE software is for making the Nook a general ePub reader and not just a B&N & Public Domain ePub reader ... its handy to know to that the ADE software will not necessarily recognize that there is no DRM and can mess up a perfectly good pdf by trying to convert DRM that isn't there in the first place.

Well, when you said that ADE will sometimes mess up a legit pdf, I knew right away this was the problem, since I could read it in my FF epub extension. Didn't know that - so thanks again. I will go the direct download route in the future...

Yes, and it seems BN reps would know this, or at least one out of the 4 I've talked/chatted with. I have borrowed one library book on it, which worked fine via ADE sideload. You know, I've been reading a little more about rooting the Nook, for me it would be via a pre-made memory card i.e. N2C or something like that. But I suppose as long as I can get around the above problem, I probably won't need to do even that. Thanks again, you've been very helpful.

In my case, PDF is the only format which I can read in another language such as Chinese and Vietnamese because Chinese language use character and Vietnamese use a different type of alphabet. I hope Barne & Noble should fix this problem soon. So that the Nook color can get more popular in other country too. PDF is the only format which people can read books in other languuages (not use alphabet).

Try one of the PDF apps.
ezPDF seems to be one of the best.

It may also involve how the PDF was created. Does the PDF include the embedding of the fonts used or not. If the fonts are embedded they can easily be displayed but the PDF will be much larger. If the fonts are not embedded then you device needs to supply the information about how to display them.

Buy EZpdfReader. It is very smooth. Zooms in and out easily, you can make notes and highlights and put editing indicators in the document. It has a crop feature. Can select text and copy. Will open password protected pdf's (if you have the password). Go try it out on a nook at BN store. for 3 bucks it is easily well worth it. The increase of quality and decrease in frustration. enough said.

Thank you! I only wish that I could have heard this answer in my many attempts to find a resolution via phone and chat with BN reps. What I did was download a pdf file directly to the Nook Color, and it worked fine... the same file that was transferred from my documents to the ADE, then sideloaded from there to the NC (and consequently not working) worked just fine with a direct download to the NC. Wow, I wonder why I even bothered using ADE at all! I don't think the file had DRM since it was a public domain ebook.
Thanks much!
