How many periodicals may I receive with a 14 day free trial? One or many?

As many as they publish. Depends on the periodical type. For a daily paper, up to 14. For a weekly, two. For a monthly, one.
You will need to remember to cancel before you pass the 14th day. I would cancel on the 13th day to be safe. Once you pass 14 days, you'll be billed.

This may have changed, but previously I lucked out and got two monthly issues during trial periods for several magazines. Just happened to begin at the end of the month. Got the current issue, then received the new issue when it came out, all within the 14 days.

Hadn't thought of that, but if you start the trial period just before the new issue comes out, you could get the current issue and then the next one when it comes out.
I've only tried it with my local newspaper, and let it run for 10 days. Showed up every morning. Some time later, I subscribed for good.
