You don't get cash for a store gift card. It's not B&N. Take the store credit and buy something else.

I do not have an Amex gift card, but Amex gift card receipeint site has a lot of information about the card. It also states that local laws.

It is a pre-paid payment card and not a cash card. "Used like cash" is not cash. You should calmly discuss this with the store manger and Amex.

You can do the following

1) Go to another store.

2) Go to same store on another day.

3) Sell it on eBay or Craigslist.

I think they just have to be careful, that's all.

Amex gift cards are treated as credit cards.  Which is why you can only get store credit for them.  I very much doubt you will find any store willing to give you cash on that return.
