[BUG] Last portion of hyphenated word is missing: Nook Simple

Portions of some words in Brave New World are missing when they line wrap with a hyphen. See below for details and an example.

Device: Nook Simple

Book: Brave new world

Pg 91
Malabar
Third smallest font
Mid line spacing
Mid margins
Sentence "But cleanliness is next to fordliness." She in-sisted.

The "sisted" part of insisted is missing. If I change font sizes, the word is displayed correctly.

I see this problem several times a day. I have software version 1.0.1, which was released since this problem was first reported. Any update on when it might be fixed? Or a way to disable auto-hyphenation?

While this may be a software problem specific to the NOOK, my experience with less-than-perfect e-book files, both in terms of copy editing and formatting/conversion, would lead me to believe that this is a problem from the publisher's end with the file itself, not how the NOOK is interpreting it.

Now, if you could say it worked fine in 1.0 and is "broken" in 1.0.1, that's another story.

NOOK doesn't have auto-hyphenation. To my knowledge, no e-book reader supports auto-hyphenation on DRMed EPUBs. A few minor ones — Bookeen Orizon, Pocketbook — provide it for non-DRMed EPUBs. Kindle doesn't do auto-hyphenation, either.

The lack of auto-hyphenation is a significant annoyance for publishers. If they choose to use left-justification, the text has good spacing but a ragged right margin. If they choose to use full justification, the text has a straight right margin but sometimes has ugly spacing, especially at large font sizes.

Re: [BUG] Last portion of hyphenated word is missing: Nook Simple

Doug_Pardee, I'm not using DRM'ed epubs. I'm using epubs (mostly of fanfiction, so please hold any lectures about piracy) generated from several sources: Sigil, Calibre, various websites and a python program I (and several hundred other people) have been using that I'm a primary developer for. The Nook Simple Touch very definitely auto-hyphenates the files I have. Assuming this board allows me to include URLs, I'll provide proof. First, an example of both auto-hyphenation and missing partial word, with settings displayed: http://www.i-op.com/jimm/nook/IMG_6939.JPG Second, showing the missing part when the margins are changed: http://www.i-op.com/jimm/nook/IMG_6940.JPG Third, the epub (from Sigil, valid according to both epubcheck and epubpreflight): http://www.i-op.com/jimm/nook/0TestingNookHyphenation.epub I hope that this will convince everyone that this problem is real and help find a solution.
