Books previously downloaded need redownloading

I called tech support because I am having to redownload ebooks that I previously purchased and downloaded.  This is really irritating.  I have approximately 50 books on my Nook - 1st Edition - many of them were the Friday freebies and some that I purchased.  Has anyone had this trouble with their downloads?  Tech support said it is probably because my Nook was completely shut off.  This just sounded ridiculous to me.  Fortunately I am not in an area with no WiFi so I can redownload my books - very time consuming.

You're not alone! My email changed so I had to unregister and regesiter my new email just to get my books. After doing this I lost several books!:smileymad:  They told me that by doing this that it showed that my Bank had declined those books. Which before I had no problems reading and downloading. They apologized and said I can re-purchase these books. I always had recieved good Customer Service until the last couple months. So I ended up loseing at least a dozen if not more! They said sorry hope you have a nice day and that was that! I've heard this mentioned before and didn't beleive it since they're saved on the B&N web site. I've been proven wrong and they should look into maybe changing their reps with ones more compatent and treats you with respect at the very least. I was very disapointed with how they handled the situation and put the blame on me. I know for a fact my account had the funds. I just think they didn't want to deal with it!:smileymad:

Can anyone help? I think my fingers got glued to my NOOK and I can't seem to put it down!1! :smileyhappy:-
Although it's a good conversation piece when out in public!!

It's not necessarily relevant to this specific situation, but I'm taking this opportunity to once again remind everyone that you should never rely on B&N (or any bookseller) to keep your only backups. No bookseller guarantees, nor can they guarantee, that you'll be able to redownload. It depends on availability of the title from the publisher and distributor.

From B&N's Terms of Use:

Some Digital Content may not remain available for re-download from your NOOK Library, if for example, the publisher of the Digital Content no longer retains the rights or other licenses, consents or permissions to that Digital Content. Digital Content already downloaded to your device[s] will not be affected.

This is a problem when unregister/reregister is a necessary operation if you, say, change your account's password because of the many publicized username/password thefts. It's especially an annoyance with the NOOK 1st Edition, where a sideloaded backup copy doesn't appear in the B&N Library and thus is missing a few features like cover-flow.

So yes, B&N could reduce the problems here. But the bottom line remains: always make your own backups of any computer data that you want to keep. My own B&N e-books are saved in all of the following places:

  1. My NOOK Library on BN.com
  2. My NOOK for PC "locker" on my main computer
  3. My Calibre library on my main computer
  4. Dropbox out on the 'Net
  5. My netbook computer, via Dropbox

Some of my B&N e-books are also on my NOOK itself, but that doesn't really count as a backup. :smileytongue:

It has NOTHING to do with you shutting it off. I have had this issue many times and was also told that IF i have photos & friend stuff on my nook I will lose it when this happens. and I DO have Wifi. this is just one of the many software glitches Nook has yet to correct. check you builling too-I ma just saying!

Re: Books previously downloaded need redownloading

I've had the same thing happen, nearly constantly, with my nook color. Books that I got just a few weeks ago have the 'download' label and I can't read them until I get connected to wifi again. I don't know if I'd have the same problem if I downloaded them to the PC first then sideloaded them to the nook. It's a pretty serious bug and frankly makes me prefer to get content from other providers rather than B&N.

I was having what seemed like a similar problem, but it turned out that I was actually the problem.  Turns out that when doing some Nook housekeeping through Adobe Digital Editions, I was unwittingly deleting some of my B&N content, hence the need to download again. The only Nook housekeeping I do now (at least for anything purchased or downloaded from B&N) is on the website, with Nook for PC or with the Nook itself.  I use ADE stricly for library books and other side-loaded content.  Perhaps a different root problem from others, but I thought I'd put it out there in case it helps anyone, because sometimes B&N content is not recognizable as such in ADE and could be easily deleted by mistake..
