If BN is not going to support the Classic Nook, which is stretching it since there has only been one upgrade  in the last year, than they should have a trade in or upgrade program.  It would be nice to get an answer from BN.

Why should they give you a trade-in or upgrade?  Did your original Nook stop working?

Re: Continued Nook Classic Updates

Trade-in for what?  If you want a N2E or a NC you would do better to try to sell your N1E yourself and then use that $ towards the other device.  Before the N2E I have seen BN offering the N1E (wifi only) as low as $70 refurbished (but with full warranty) on ebay or buy.com.  They would probably offer you a trade-in value of about 30-40% of that so $20-$30.  No matter how long you have owned it, it is now "used" and highly depreciated in value.

For that amount I would just keep the N1E and go buy a new device if I wanted one and keep the N1E as a backup or maybe a "beach" device".

Personally, I don't want to trade it in.  I like my N1E.  I like it better than the N2E (not disparaging the N2E at all, just my preference).  I thought about the NC but got an Ipad instead.

remember we need to be clear here:  we have received word on Nook 1E support...it will continue and that's not really up for debate.  What is still missing is an answer regarding continued firmware revisions.  And yes, I think we should get an answer on that...if it's no, that's fine, just please tell us.

I agree. Just answer the question: are any further firmware updates planned? Yes or No.

The arguments for and against will continue to clutter up these boards as long as they leave that question unanswered.

I'm not convinced that'll help. The answer would be "No updates are planned".

  • When the NOOK Wi-Fi came out, NOOK 3G got the 1.4 update.
  • When NOOK Color came out, NOOK 3G & Wi-Fi got the 1.5 update.
  • When the new NOOK came out, nothing.
  • It's been over six months since 1.5 came out.
  • B&N's development team has its hands full with NOOK Color and the new NOOK.
  • NOOK 1E uses a long-obsolete version of Android that the development team has probably lost touch with.
  • There's no commercial value to B&N releasing an update to the NOOK 1E — they wouldn't sell even one more unit because of the update (since all units will sell out regardless).
  • An update would increase the load on the already-strained Customer Service operation for a while.
  • It's possible that an update would cause problems requiring a further update, adding to the expense without increasing income.

But telling people "No more updates" isn't going to reduce the number of postings on the topic. It'll just change the content from "Is there going to be an update?" to "I demand an update."

all of which doesn't explain the rash of people suddenly getting an unannounced firmware upgrade to 1.6

No hoax.  I'm getting it, but I can't tell what changed.

I wonder if it's just the underlying changes that needed to be made because of My NOOK.  I seriously haven't found a difference yet, but I've only had it 10? minutes and my NOOK has been rebooted three times because it's not seeing my micro SD card.

[I'm one that didn't expect anything beyond whatever changes might have been needed for My NOOK functionality and frankly, was quite surprised that that was even implied.]

B&N's doing that just to make me look stupid for having said just a few hours ago that it wouldn't happen. :smileywink:

So far, you don't seem to be technically wrong since those that have gotten it report that they see no change other than a version change.  Maybe there is some hidden functionality that will suddenly appear :smileysurprised:

Re: Continued Nook Classic Updates

Sam said it is something to do with "the Cloud" and shouldn't affect the nook's at all.

Re: Continued Nook Classic Updates

Well, I have not received an update yet. I was unaware that one was forthcoming or available, even after visiting yesterday, so I knew of no reason to take my Nook off airplane mode. I'm currently in a dead area, so I guess I'll have to wait until I get home later today to see what, if anything happens.

Re: Continued Nook Classic Updates

I have two N1E's and no updates have arrived.  The SD Card I have in one stopped showing up about two months ago.

Re: Continued Nook Classic Updates

Aside from all the reports of the 1.6 issues........

I wonder if the update rollout is done by region.  I've read that some have received the update and others not.

I'm in the Chicagoland area and have not received the update.

Or perhaps some kind of check of the N1E is made when wi-fi is enabled.  Maybe newer serial #s don't need the update.

Just wondering.

Re: Continued Nook Classic Updates

My N1E attempted to get the update twice yesterday but was unable to download it.  I don't think its tried since.

They may have put it on hold until they work out the sd card problem.

Re: Continued Nook Classic Updates

Hopefully, since that would be the smart thing to do.  Of course, they aren't going to tell us it is safe to come out of airplane mode because they aren't pushing out the update.  Hopefully, they will tell us when it is safe because the SD problem is fixed (to my untrained mind it seems like a corrupt driver for SDHC)

Re: Continued Nook Classic Updates

We just received update 1.7 (my bad, I guess I did not always recognize all the new updates) however, my internet banner still reads "beta", so I wonder what makes our models different?
