Hi Victor,
What you are seeing is just a condition of digital formatting. Since the pages are fit to your screen and depending on what font size you are using, you may see the same page spread across multiple screens. Creating the effect where the page numbers are not increasing, because in reality they are not.
I also believe page numbers were always on the bottom, though if I'm mistaken my apologies.
