1) I do not believe this is true. That is not my understanding of how it works. If you change your password online, anyone/device trying to use the old password should be blocked from access, purchase or otherwise. Where did you come by the knowledge? Have you actually tested it out?
2) If the device is still registered to your account, you can deregister online on the Manage My Nook page under the My NOOK section. This should also prevent them from accessing/purchasing.
3) You should not have to open a new account. Worst case, call your relative and walk them through de-registering and creating their own account.

#2 is a winner. I spent 1/2 hour on the phone with B&N support and this was never suggested. Thank you very much! I do see that the gift Nook IS still registered to my account. I will ask her once again to de-register or else.
But interestingly, on my Android tablet running the Nook app, it is not shown as a device to deregister, so the problem would not be solved if I had registered it to the Nook app on non-Nook hardware.
It is easy to test that if you change your password the Nook doesn't request the password the next time you use it. After changing my password from my computer, my wife's Nook didn't ask. I downloaded a magazine and a free book. No challenge for a password.

If you failed to set the "password required for purchase" option, I don't see how that's B&N's fault.
I agree this was my fault. But I have a strong password that my wife can't remember and she enjoys the painfree purchase experience. I monitor the purchase emails closely, expecting she'll buy certain types of content a few times a month. And I never told anybody my password when I registered the gift Nook, believing that I'd be able to change it and deactivate access to my account easily. I think many people would think the same.
But if I make this mistake once I should not have to turn on the password required for purchase forever! This "deregister" method works for Nook devices. But in general the solution to this problem in most people's mind would be to change their password. I think the Nook app (on any device) should store the encrypted password (or date the password was last confirmed) and validate it hasn't been updated. If it was changed since the last time, it should challenge for the password and not allow access to the account until it is corrected entered (maybe it would allow up to some number of tries and then deregister).

It was my understanding that this is how it was supposed to work. Obviously, based on your experiences, it is not.
I agree, this needs to get fixed ASAP.
And if the gift Nook doesn't de-register in a reasonable amount of time, force it from your My Nook account. Won't that be a surprise! ![]()
