A Fan's Notes
Status: Bookseller PicksA Fan's Notes, originally published in 1968, is one the greatest novels you've probably never read. Sadly, aside from a small team of readers, the book is nearly forgotten. Pidgeon-holed and wrongly classified as a "book about football", A Fan's Notes is the story of the "American Dream" deferred; an idealized notion that Fred Exley will never attain.
But, in language as beautiful as it is raw, and laced with uproarious humor, Exley cries out against dreaming the impossible dream; "life isn't all a goddam football game! You won't always get the girl! Life is rejection and pain and loss".
Truly a book for the ages. Read it. I promise, you won't soon forget it.
