Imagine the wonderful zaniness of Monty Python, the fast paced adventure of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and the fun goofiness of Diary of a Wimpy Kid- now you have a bit of the flavor of Michael Grant's new series for kids- The Magnificent 12.  Twelve year old Mack had no idea when he got up that morning that the day would end with his making friends with the school bully and being recruited to save the world from the evil Pale Queen and her daughter (think beautiful princess one minute and head-biting giant insect the next).  Mack and Stefan (bully turned bodyguard) embark on this quest after a 3,000 year old member of the old Magnifica calls on Mack to find the other eleven new Magnifica and put the evil, nasty "end of the world" bad Pale Queen and her daughter back in the box.  Risking certain death, Mack leaves a clay Golem at home in his place and starts off to do battle and find the others.  Did I mention that this kid is scared of everything?  Get ready because this is one book that kids will finish in one sitting and then whine because the second isn't published yet.  Great read for kids 8 and up.  Chuckles galore!  Can't wait for the next one!
