Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Status: Bookseller Picks
Austenland will never be the same. This first release from the new teen publisher, Quirk Classics, brings readers back to the quiet English village of Meryton, but this time England is overrun with zombies and the Bennet family is trained zombie killers. All of the romance and intrigue from Jane Austen's original is intact, featuring the classic characters of Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy, and more; however, now they not only have to survive the gossip and ridicule of their time, but also the brain-eating hellspawn they have sworn to destroy. Purists may faint on sight, but over 80% of Jane Austen's original material is retained with small "adjustments" and "additions" by author Seth Grahame-Smith included throughout the book. A fun read for horror enthusiasts and Austen fans alike. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies also comes in a hardcover Deluxe Heirloom Edition with 30% more zombie action than the original New York Times bestselling paperback!
Also from the publisher: Sense and Sensibility and Sea-Monsters

I thought "Pride & Prejudice and Zombies" had a great concept and the book was fairly amusing, but I would have liked this book ten times more if it had been a complete retelling of the P & P story in Seth Grahame-Smith's own words. It bothered me that it was simply a re-mixed & altered version of Jane Austen's own words.

I haven't read this particular book so I will not pass judgment! I think it is a great testament to Austen's wonderful ability and the amazing novels that she created, that have passed the test of time! However how much writing skill is involved in taking someone else's work and twisting it? (I am asking this open- mindedly, it could be a beautifully written zombie novel that does justice to P&P, I'm just curious!)

Someone asks what skill is involved in taking someone else's work and twisting it...the answer...NONE! This book is tough to read as it is completely ridiculous. I don't think I would have enjoyed reading the original because of the old language, but adding zombies just makes it silly and boring. I tried very hard to like it, but I don't. I even forced myself to keep reading to see if it got better...it didn't. I finally gave up and put it down forever.

I was bored and annoyed by every bit of writing in this book. It's rare for me to start a story and not finish, but I couldn't even get half-way through this rag.
I don't recommend it.
(I never liked Austen much to begin with, and I have a truly morbid sense of humor, so I thought this would be a fun read.)

My sister and I are avid fans of Jane Austen and of P&P in particular, and we thought that this book was a hoot! It's supposed to be silly and ridiculous. We picked it up while we were in Birmingham and spent two days of our trip reading it aloud dramatically to one another and crying tears of laughter. There's a lot of humor in the original P&P, and P&P&Z exaggeratedly made fun of all the right things in the original. (We especially liked the way they talked about Charlotte being so ancient that she could never hope to be married) To my mind, if the reader has never read P&P, they are unlikely to appreciate this parody.
On the otherhand, I don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much if I'd not had my sister there to laugh with me. ![]()
