The Help

Status: Bookseller Picks

I had no idea when I picked this book up how much I would love it.  Set in Mississippi, during the turbulent 1960's a privileged, young,  white woman dreams of being a writer.  Skeeter applies to several publishing houses, but has no previous writing experience.  A woman that works at a publishing house sends her a letter and tells her to write whenever and whatever she can.  When Skeeter finds a job writing a "how-to" cleaning column for the local paper she realizes she needs help.  She finds the answers in the form of her best friends black maid.  What starts as a basic request for cleaning tips soon turns into an unbreakable bond.

You will not want this book to end and once it  does you will want to tell everybody you know to read it.

This is the best book I have read since "Pillars of the Earth"...maybe even better.  I cannot put it down!  I can't wait until luch time when I can sneak into my office and read more!  So enjoyable and amazed this is the authors first novel!

Bookclub is tonight - we read this book and I loved it.  I can't wait to get together and discuss it.  It was all good but I could not put it down for the last 1/4 of the book.  Enjoy.

I second Jess-M's recommendation.  The Help is a wonderful novel and Kathryn Stockett has done a brilliant job of recreating the tension of Jackson, MS, at the beginning of the civil rights era (something Stockett knows a little about, but you'll need to read all of the book before you read her little monograph at the very end).  She very cleverly changes the narrative point-of-view from Aibileen to Minny to Miss Skeeter, allowing each woman to narrate in a continuous circle, never overlapping sections of time, and the changes allow the characters' voices to sound true.

I'm just about to start reading The Help. It was suggested to me by my sister, and reading everyones comments here has made the book all the more appealing. I'm looking forward to it now.
