road trip with a dwarf , yard gnome and a sweet toothed angel

Status: Bookseller Picks

Let me just start by saying that if there is a gnome in the story I am sold from page one!

This is one of the wittiest books I have read in a long long time.  Picture our hero Cameron, a somewhat normal 16 year old "stay off the radar" kind of high school kid.  Add to this his discovery that he is dying from mad cow disease but given a chance to find a cure while also saving the universe.  What is real and what is a big whopper of a hallucination we will never know but it makes for one heck of a good read.  Cameron is told by his guardian angel that he must  find DR.. X who has the cure for his disease and save the world along the way.  With the help of Gonzo, a hypochondriac mommy-coddled dwarf and Bader, a yard gnome they rescue during their travels they go on a wild road trip.  This would be my all time great pick for teens if it didn't contain the dreaded - language, drugs and sex.  It will be a great choice for older teens and young adults.  Their is a moral to all of this- you can just live or you can really live your life.  I have been a fan of Libba Bray's earlier books but never knew she was this funny.  She is up there with Terry Prachett, Neil Gaiman and Rick Riordan.  Someone should buy the movie rights!

This book really caught my eye when I was going through teen new releases last week! I didn't expect this type of book from Libba Bray, who I only knew from A Great and Terrible Beauty, and I'm definitely going to pick it up now.

This book was hilarious! Part of the hilarity was not knowing whether the story was happening in reality or in hallucinations. Though I have to admit...the ending upset me.
