Lake [ Edited ]

I'd love to hear what others' early impressions of Lake are. I found her to be an extraordinary character. Part of my immediate love was mom-fantasy: A woman with wild and wonderful hair, highly sharpened survival skills, who can cook brilliantly and talk about poetry and string-theory with her kid over dinner? I want to be her, so certainly I can't help but watch her every move!

And I found the writing about this friendship developing between Lake and Cornelia to be wonderfully nuanced. The immediate comfort they seemed to find with each other, contrasted with , some not-quite awkward moments, slight bristlings, and the times each woman held back instead of "spilling."

What do you make of her? What do you make of her picking up and hauling across the country to put her son in an exceptional charter school?

Like Cornelia, with whom I bonded emotionally from the first paragraph, I was immediately drawn to Lake.

Everything about Lake is interesting... her hair, her intelligence, her encyclopedic knowledge of George Cukor films... for her to quote the most interesting line from one of my favorite classic films, THE WOMEN, did me in.

Her hilarious wit.... "my middle name is Piper, like viper with a P..."

I laughed so hard, I fell out of my chair.

But again, I wondered.... keeping in mind how Piper was more than what she seemed at first, I wondered about Lake.... is anyone so wonderful also without flaws?

I immediately respected Lake, thought she was genuine and funny, but didn't think she was someone I would hang out with.  She and I don't have much in common, and while I am in no way opposed to her, I cannot imagine ever being close to her.

Funny Laura, I liked Lake a lot and felt just the opposite, like I could be best friends with her. She's intriguing.

I was the opposite too. I would also like to be friends with her but I think her free spirit would be a turn off or possibly intimidating to some people. She is the opposite of Piper who is all about structure. Lake seems to go with the flow but she does create a structured life for her son. It's not rigid but he does have routines and he goes to school. I like how she encourages Dev to explore and develop his genius. She allows him freedom to grow with it and see where it takes him.

A new thread would be great because I haven't finished the book yet but whatever is easiest is fine with me. Hopefully I'll have a lot more time to spend on it now and will be able to catch up with the chats during this final week. I hate for it to end!
