I have been wondering about first addition advance reading copies. I recently had a stroke of good luck and received an advance reading copy of the book that is currently being discussed on the First Look club. It never occurred to me (although it should have) that some authors do this kind of thing when they first start out. Are these books ever considered later on if the author is doing very well as a good collector piece?

In my experience, an ARC really isn't worth very much unless its unique (been signed, or the author made corrections or perhaps the book was somehow never published and only the ARCs remain, etc). Since an ARC really isn't intended for re-sale, it technically has no value. The flip side is that ARCs never used to exist (I hadn't heard of them at all until about 15 years ago, but I'm from Iowa so we may not have been much of a market) so perhaps in the future there might be some value to a collector.
