Mr Darcy's Diary

I was just wondering if anyone who is a Pride and Prejudice (and/or Jane Austen) fan has attempted to read the new book "Mr Darcy's Diary" written by Amanda Grange. If so, I was just wondering what you thought of it. I tried to read it, but didn't get very far. I was disappointed by the style of writing she used in the book. I just couldn't get past the first few pages even though I skipped through to the middle to see if it improved. I guess if you are reading for story content alone, it may be interesting. However, for me, I couldn't get past the fact that it didn't feel like Mr Darcy's writing at all. Has anyone read it and what do you think?

Hi, I definitely am a fan of Jane Austen Novels and I adore Pride and Prejudice but I find that books that are written around the story are not what they seem to be. I am tempted to read the others, Mr. Darby's daughter and etc. But I know it want seem right with the story. It just seems sequels to great novels just doesn't satisfy my hunger for conclusions or continuations to them. Not so far anyway. No, I havent read the one by Amanda Grange and fear it wouldnt fulfill my fantansy either.

No, I have not read that one yet. I have heard of others that were disappointed in it as well. But I do recommend the Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman series by Pamela Aidan. First-"An Assembley Such as This". Second-"Duty and Desire" (this one is my least favorite). Third- "These Three Remain". The only other sequel and I have enjoyed is by Helen Halstead "Mr. Darcy Presents His Bride"

Re: Mr Darcy's Diary

I can't read any of those books. They depress me because I feel they are poor continuations of Jane Austen's books and they could ruin the earlier novels for me.

I agree about not reading them.

Re: Mr Darcy's Diary

They certainly don't qualify for the title of British Classics.

As well, i agree. Those books, in my opinion, only take away from the genius that are Jane Austen's novels.

Re: Mr Darcy's Diary

I loved the Aidan series. Unfortunately it was the first sequel I read. I think it spoiled me for all others. I'm reading Helen Halstead's "Mr. Darcy Presents His Bride" right now. I don't think I much care for it. It is interesting to see her take but I feel like the characters have become so out-of-character to me. We'll see how things go to the end.

I have bought several of the books about Mr. Darch but haven't read them. Some people think if you are really a fan of the classic, you would hate the copies.

Re: Mr Darcy's Diary

My best friend and I are both Pride and Prejudice worshippers, and we both are sifting through all the "sequels" we can find, hoping to find someone who can amuse us as much as Austen herself did. We've both read Mr. Darcy's Diary by Grange, and both of us found it okay. It wasn't close to Austen herself, but we both agree that there are indeed worse "sequels" out there. I'd personally recommend Aidan's trilogy, or even the Letters from Pemberley series.

Re: Mr Darcy's Diary

I was thinking of reading the "sequels" but wasn't sure if they were worth the money or not. I loved Pride and Prejudice and I know am reading sense and sensability. I find sometimes its a little hard to get past the beginning of these books because of the old fashioned writing but once you get started Jane Austen is a great writer!!!

Re: Mr Darcy's Diary

I had a similar problem with Sense and Sensibility, maybe I should try a different version of the book, sometimes it helps. Like starting off maybe with an illustrated classics version to get the gist of the story then returning to the original, It works

I was also wondering whether to read all those books about Jane Austin books. I have been tempted but am afraid it would greatly disappoint me so I haven't read any of them yet.

Re: Mr Darcy's Diary

i too have been curious about mr. darcy's diary. i have read several continuation books & have been pleased by some of them. i go into reading them knowing that they won't be as good as the original austen novels. one that was very interesting was a visit to highbury/another view of emma by joan austen-leigh. it is told in letters written between mrs. goddard & her sister. it may be out of print. i checked it out of the library.

Re: Mr Darcy's Diary

I personally won't read any sequels written by authors other than the original. I don't think they can do justice, for one, but I also think that Jane Austen knew in her mind where her characters would end up and how their lives would play out, even if she didn't write a book on it. I feel they are her characters to write about and not the other authors.
