February 16-20: E. Lynn Harris

[ Edited ]

Our third February Center Stage author is E. Lynn Harris, ready to chat with us all about his new novel Basketball Jones as well as his previous bestselling novels.

Harris was born in Flint, Michigan and raised, along with three sisters, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where he was the school's first black yearbook editor, the first black male Razorbacks cheerleader, and the president of his fraternity. He graduated with honors with a degree in journalism.

Harris' first novel Invisible Life, which Anchor published, was followed by Just As I Am(1994), And This Too Shall Pass (1996), If This World Were Mine(1997), Abide with Me (1999), Not A Day Goes By (2000), Any Way the Wind Blows (2001), A Love of My Own (2002) I Say A Little Prayer (2006) and Just Too Good to Be True (2008).

All ten of Harris's novels have hit the New York Times bestseller list, and they have also appeared on the bestseller lists of the Wall Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times. In 2003, Harris published his first work of nonfiction, a memoir entitled What Becomes of the Brokenhearted, which was also a New York Times bestseller. Today, there are more than four million copies of his books in print.

Harris has won numerous accolades and prizes for his work. Just As I Am was awarded the Novel of the Year Prize by the Blackboard African-American Bestsellers, Inc. If This World Were Mine was nominated for a NAACP Image Award and won the James Baldwin Award for Literary Excellence. Abide with Me was also nominated for a NAACP Image Award. His anthology Freedom in this Village won the Lambda Literary Award in 2005. In 1999, the University of Arkansas honored Harris with a Citation of Distinguished Alumni for outstanding professional achievement, and in October 2000 he was inductedinto the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame. Over the past three years, he has also been named to Ebony's "Most Intriguing Blacks" list, Out Magazine's "Out 100" list, New York Magazine's "Gay Power 101" list, and Savoy's "100 Leaders and Heroes in Black America" list. Other honors have included the Sprague Todes Literary Award, the Harvey Milk Honorary Diploma, and The Silas Hunt Award for Outstanding Achievement from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

He divides his time between Atlanta, Georgia, and Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Here's a brief description of Basketball Jones:

Aldridge James “AJ” Richardson is living the good life. He has a gorgeous town house in always-flavorful New Orleans, plenty of frequent-flier miles from jet-setting around the country on a whim, and an MBA—but he’s never had to work a regular job. He owes it all to his longtime lover, Dray Jones. Dray Jones the rich and famous NBA star. They fell in love in college when AJ was hired to tutor Dray, a freshman on the basketball team. But Dray knew if he wanted to make it to the big time, he must juggle his public image and his private desires. Built on a deep, abiding love, their hidden relationship sustains them both, but when Dray’s teammates begin to ask insinuating questions about AJ, Dray puts their doubts to rest by marrying Judi, a beautiful and ambitious woman. Judi knows nothing about Dray’s “other life.” Or does she?

In Basketball Jones, E. Lynn Harris explores the consequences of loving someone who is forced to conform to the rules society demands its public heroes follow. Filled with nonstop twists and turns, it will keep readers riveted from the first page to the last.

We're looking forward to welcoming E. Lynn Harris to Center Stage, and want to remind readers that you can ask Harris questions about any of his books, new and old.

Let's get this Center Stage party started. Lynn, we've just finished celebrating that supposedly most-romantic festival, Valentine's Day. What message would you send your new book's protagonist, AJ Richardson, for V-Day?

E. Lynn Harris rocks!!!  lol  honestly you are such a wonderful writer very captivating!  My favorite I would say is Just Too good To Be True but i was lovin Basketball Jones.  I will say sometimes the sex is a little much for me but i can bypass it if i need to!   I think because of the lifestyle you write about that a lot of people are missing the boat on you.  Will there be more books like Just Too Good To Be True?  Well even if not I'm so with you, you write it and I'll be reading!

Hi rach9599! I think you've touched on a good subject: "I will say sometimes the sex is a little much for me but I can bypass it if I need to!" Many of the most popular writers have sex scenes that can be "a little much," but as you said, we can bypass them... Are there other Harris fans out there who skip the sex scenes? Those who love them?

Re: February 16-20: E. Lynn Harris

Greetings!

I enjoyed reading Basketball Jones very much. I think mainly because I saw myself throughout the book. Near the end of the book, though, I would have liked to have seen our characters mend their relationship--not necessarily a physical one, but at least remain distant friends. Maybe I just like happy endings! Nonetheless, a good read. One thing I would like to give the author accolades for is being very descriptive. He sets the scene perfectly. With each of his novels, I am able to picture exactly where the characters are, what they are wearing, their vivid thoughts, and what they look like. It almost feels as if I am watching a movie--but reading a book!

Re: February 16-20: E. Lynn Harris

I have read all of E. Lynn Harris' books, he is one of my favorite authors. I just recently bought 'Basketball Jones' and will start it soon (reading something else right now). I really enjoyed 'Just Too Good to be True'. Plus his novels 'Not a Day Goes By' and 'A Love of My Own were a couple favorites of mine too. I also enjoyed the cd. I went to a book signing in Minneapolis a few years ago, which was really good, wish you'd come back.  A member of my family lives the life style of some of your characters which helps me be more understanding. Thanks

Re: February 16-20: E. Lynn Harris

I have read Invisible Life and Just as I am. I personally  LOVE the sex scenes in the book they are Hott!! My husband has NO problem when I am reading these books as he is the beneficiary of the sexy parts *wink wink* if you know what I mean.

I also really like the point of view from both sides of the fence...it makes you realize that people have the same feelings about the people they are attracted to whether it be the same sex or the opposite sex. I like to read diverse  books and I think Lynn offers an uncommon point of view one that most of us don't really know that much about so it dispells the mystery around it. I also think he is one of the only writers I have read that represent the African American point of view on this subject area..

I am looking forward to reading Basketball Jones!

Welcome, JaydeRenay -- I really like your observation about reading diverse books, as well as that Harris offers an uncommon point of view. One of the things I appreciate about his writing is that while you may not be familiar with that point of view, you feel comfortable entering his characters' world -- and that helps readers learn more about other people. As far as I'm concerned, that's one of the most important reasons to read.
How many of Harris's books have you already read?

Hi there, Chelle007 -- Even if reviews are good, they aren't always right when it comes to what a reader sees in a book!  So glad you followed your own instincts and are loving what you found.
What do you like best about Basketball Jones?

I am a die-hard E. Lynn Harris fan and have been forever! I don't know that I have a favorite book since they are all excellent. If I had to pick one it would probably be "Invisible Life". That first introduced me to the concept of a man being able to love another and because of family values and the way a person is raised, they're fighting to be true to themselves. I initially abhorred Basil Henderson, before I realized that he had a lot to lose by going public and also I never really understood the inner turmoil someone in his position goes through. I always loved Raymond Tyler Jr. and I hope that we can see another story based on him finally finding some happiness. Mr. Harris eludes to it in a later book, but I don't recall any firm delcaration of it.

Excellent, please do come back when you're finished and let's chat more about the book, Chelle007. I agree that Harris is good at writing love scenes that aren't about one preference or another, just about attraction and passion.

Hi, Ruareader (like the name!). I can't wait to see what Harris has to say about Raymond Tyler, Jr.
Of course, you've hit on something that I think is so exciting about reading (and why I can't imagine reading print ever going away entirely): You can understand another person (i.e., character) in ways that don't come across in any other medium.

AJ is a hopeless romantic so I'm sure he'd plan something special for Dray on V-Day.  My only concern is that Dray will most likely be late or have to leave early.

Re: February 16-20: E. Lynn Harris

I plan to write a mainstream novel and gay novel every year for the next five years.  I hope my fans will follow me on both journey's but I know the sex scene sometimes get hot.  So hot that I can't even read them myself in public.  They make me blush.

Re: February 16-20: E. Lynn Harris

I LOVE Canada and hope to return very soon.  I was surprised I had so many fans when I visited some years ago.
