We're finishing out February not with a whimper but with a bang here at Center Stage, welcoming author Christopher Moore, whose latest novel is Fool, a singularly Moore-sian take on the story of King Lear.
Moore's not like any other fiction writer out there, but you'd never know it from his "official" biography:
"Chris was born in Toledo, Ohio andgrew up in Mansfield, Ohio. His father was a highway patrolman and his mothersold major appliances at a department store. He attended Ohio State Universityand Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. He moved to Californiawhen he was 19 years old and lived on the Central Coast until 2003, when hemoved to Hawaii.
Before publishing his first novel,Practical Demonkeeping in 1992, he worked as a roofer, a grocery clerk,a hotel night auditor, and insurance broker, a waiter, a photographer, and arock and roll DJ. Chris has drawn on all of these work experiences to createthe characters in his books. When he's not writing, Chris enjoys oceankayaking, scuba diving, photography, and sumi-e ink painting. He divides histime between Hawaii and San Francisco."
Doesn't that all make Moore sound like someone who might write nice, sensible how-to articles? His fans know that nothing could be further from the truth. Moore's novels, from Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story to Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Friend on to Fluke, Or I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings are a genre unto themselves that just might be deemed "absurdist fiction," but can certainly be called enormous fun.

I can't wait! I loved A Dirty Job and Island of the Sequined Love Nun (did I spell that right?).

Oh yay!! I LOVED "Lamb" - it was the first I'd read of Mr. Moore's books. Too funny, too irreverent...
So looking forward to this!

Welcome!
Welcome Chris! We're so glad you're here. My first question: Are you wearing that jester's hat for all of your tour events?
Cheers,
Bethanne

You Suck was the first book that I bought. I got a lot of weird looks while reading it at work. I have A Dirty Job that I cannot wait to read! I definitely need to pick up a copy of Fool!
Hi lg4154, glad you stopped by. Remember, you can ask Christopher Moore questions about any of his books -- not just this new one. We'd love to hear what you thought about You Suck.

Mr. Moore,
Greetings from Arlington, TX (not on your book tour; I checked).
My thanks to you for a weekend full of laughter as I read Fool. My seven year old was often peeking over my shoulder to discover the cause of my entertainment, and I spent a lot of time closing the book. She is a great reader, but I am not ready for her to read some of the words in that book! I have, however, recommended the novel to a number of older than seven readers, many of whom have never heard of you before.
Question. At any point in writing Fool, did you feel you had crossed any boundaries? Taking on the master playwright and creating a sexually gratuitous piece of prose almost seems risky. I'm not complaining. I enjoyed every bit of the perversion. I am simply wondering if you encountered protests along the way.
Hope you are having a great tour.

Welcome, Crazyteacherlady. Really like your question. Recently people have been talking about the upcoming Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and how it is an injustice to Miss Austen, etc... really, is Fool any less of an injustice to Mister Shakespeare? Yet do we not read it with glee, anyway? I say, keep up the travesties...

I have read them all. LOVE them all. Will read anything else Christopher Moore comes up with. We are voracious readers (the females in the home anyway) and have many authors we like but Christopher Moore gets recommended by us to EVERYONE we meet.
Fool is spectacular! The kind of character you can relate to someone you know. He makes you laugh and think (really!!! He does!) and enjoy the story completely. Only Christopher Moore can make up the things he does and bring them to such vivid life!
I can't wait to see what else is coming. Don't hurry the process but don't take too many breaks either!!! PLEASE?!

"Absurdist Fiction".... yeah, that fits pretty well. I picked up a copy of Lamb 5 years ago, and read it cover to cover - 4 times in a row. Since then, I have managed to collect, read and share all the rest of your books, so it went without saying that I picked up FOOL the moment it hit the shelves.
I have a couple questions for you, though...
1) ever thought of doing another "gospel"? or at least something more with Biff? I realize it may be tricky without Jesus playing straight-man... but I'm sure there's more stories to be told there.
2) I've been watching to see where you're doing your book tours... are you planning on spending any time in the Midwest? I loved the speaking gig you did in Ann Arbor, MI, and I'm constantly kicking myself... you were 45 miles away from me and I never even knew it...
3) I really liked your promo for "The Stupidest Angel" in Portuguese. I think everyone should take the time to look it up on Youtube. I would say that it might give everyone a better insight into your personality, but I think everyone will have to watch it again to see if the people with the white long-sleeve coats are hanging around out of frame....
That being said, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, keep doing what you do best... and I'll keep reading!!

Greetings from Columbia, SC . . . hope your tour is going well. We truly love your warped sense of humor. I hate to admit it but Fluke is the only one of your books I have read. I happened to read it while vacationing on a beach and have never looked at whales or any other marine life in the same light. I keep waiting for one of the whaley boys to come out and say hi. Everyone thought I was going bonkers because I couldn't stop laughing and doing that out loud.
Planning on checking out the rest of your novels . . . any suggestions as to where to start?
Thanks for making our somewhat hum-drum lives silly ones.

Greetings,
I am currently listening to Fool and perhaps getting odds looks as I chuckle away on the Stairmaster in the gym. The first or you books I listened to was A Dirty Job and I was hooked! My first question is, do you have any say in deciding who does the reading of your books? (The reader was also very good (Fisher Stevens) adding another level of entertainment)
And second, is Bloodsucking Fiends a prequel to You Suck? I've listened to You Suck and have Bloodsucking Fiends in my "to read" stack.
Thanks for the many hours of enjoyment.

1) ever thought of doing another "gospel"? or at least something more with Biff? I realize it may be tricky without Jesus playing straight-man... but I'm sure there's more stories to be told there.
I don't think I could really do anything with those characters that people wouldn't compare to Lamb and find wanting, so I think I'll let that book stand. I like the characters, but using them more might dilute their effect.
2) I've been watching to see where you're doing your book tours... are you planning on spending any time in the Midwest? I loved the speaking gig you did in Ann Arbor, MI, and I'm constantly kicking myself... you were 45 miles away from me and I never even knew it...
This tour was cut very short because of the economy. Also, since I'm touring in February the Midwest and Canada took most of the hit for cancelled dates. Maybe next book.
3) I really liked your promo for "The Stupidest Angel" in Portuguese. I think everyone should
take the time to look it up on Youtube. I would say that it might give everyone a better insight into your personality, but I think everyone will have to watch it again to see if the people with the white long-sleeve coats are hanging around out of frame....
Those are very short and goofy videos. After I get home from tour, however, I'll post a link on my blog to an audio podcast of an event I did in Denver, which will give all of you outside of the tour area and idea of what it is I do on tour.

Lamb is the first Christoper Moore book I read. I have to admit I pick up Lamb because of the cover, but the minute I starting reading it I knew I would have to read everything Mr. Moore writes. I only have 2 more books to read and I have read them all. I loved Fool. I anoyed my husband a lot by running to him every time I came across something funny. It drove my two boys (ages 8 and 9) nuts that I couldn't tell them what I was laughing so hard about. I don't want to use love too much, but I loved they way Pocket's past/childhood was told in the book. Well done! I can't wait to read the next book.
