September 15-19: Paulo Coelho

This week, we're thrilled to welcome Paulo Coelho to the Book Clubs!

Do you have a question for Paulo? Reply to this message to start the conversation.

About Paulo Coelho
His books have been translated into 56 languages, topped bestseller lists throughout the world, and scored him such celebrity fans as Julia Roberts, Bill Clinton, and Madonna; yet for Brazilian publishing phenom Paulo Colho, the road to success has been strewn with a number of obstacles, many of them rooted in his troubled past.

As a youth, Coelho was expected to follow in the footsteps of his father, a professional engineer. When he rebelled, expressing his intentions to become a writer, his parents had him committed to a psychiatric hospital where he was subjected to electro-shock therapy. He left home to join the 1970s countercultural revolution, experimenting with drugs, dabbling in black magic, and getting involved in Brazil's bohemian art and music scene. He teamed with rock musician Raul Seixas for an extremely successful songwriting partnership that changed the face of Brazilian pop -- and put a lot of money in Coelho's pockets. He also joined an anti-capitalist organization called the Alternative Society which attracted the attention of Brazil's military dictatorship. Marked down as a subversive, he was imprisoned and tortured.

Amazingly, Coelho survived these horrific experiences. He left the hippie lifestyle behind, went to work in the record industry, and began to write, but without much success. Then, in the mid-1980s, during a trip to Europe, he met a man, an unnamed mentor he refers to only as "J," who inducted him into Regnum Agnus Mundi, a secret society that blends Catholicism with a sort of New Age mysticism. At J's urging, Coelho journeyed across el Camino de Santiago, the legendary Spanish road traversed by pilgrims since the Middle Ages. He chronicled this life-changing, 500-mile journey -- the culmination of decades of soul-searching -- in The Pilgrimage, published in 1987.

The following year, Coelho wrote The Alchemist, the inspirational fable for which he is best known. The first edition sold so poorly the publisher decided not to reprint it. Undaunted, Coelho moved to a larger publishing house that seemed more interested in his work. When his third novel (1990's Brida) proved successful, the resulting media buzz carried The Alchemist all the way to the top of the charts. Released in the U.S. by HarperCollins in 1993, The Alchemist became a word-of-mouth sensation, turning Coelho into a cult hero.

Since then, he has gone on to create his own distinct literary brand -- an amalgam of allegory and self-help filled with spiritual themes and symbols. In his novels, memoirs, and aphoristic nonfiction, he returns time and again to the concepts of quest and transformation and has often said that writing has helped connect him to his soul. While his books have not always been reviewed favorably and have often become the subject of strong cultural and philosophical debate, there is no doubt that this self-described "pilgrim writer" has struck a chord in readers everywhere. In the 2009 edition of the Guiness Book of World Records, Coelho was named the most translated living author -- with William Shakespeare the most translated of all time!

Paulo,

Thank you for your work and the lessons you have taught us in sharing so much of yourself in your words...

...I have previously met you twice and adore your books, they are in me now as part of my thoughts always...

..I have always wanted to ask you why you felt so touched by the experience of meeting the man at Lourdes that you felt the need to explain your work 'Eleven Minutes'.

As you have always been so forthright in expressing yourself and following your heart in sharing your work, i am interested in what led you to include the preface and what the lesson is in that moment..

Hello Princesinha (little Princess in Portuguese):

In fact, as soon as I finished 11 Min I was a little insecure on how my readers would react. But I am commited to write what I feel, so I was going to publish te book anyway. When I saw this man, I decided that the book should be dedicated to him, to honor all the readers.

Re: September 15-19: Paulo Coelho

Mago,

 Thank you for your reply...

I have met you many years ago in New Zealand drawn by a Brasillian friend of mine...

I admit I had never read your work at that time, but that night you signed a copy of The Alchemist, and i came home to read it, and could not turn the pages quickly enough, i had to savour the words as a finely crafted banquet...

"Your words were found, and i did eat them,

and your words were my joy and the rejoicing of my heart..."

                                                                        - Jeremiah 15:16

I have since enjoyed every book i can find of yours , including 'Frases', by teaching myself portuguese enough to appreciate it...

The missing jewel has been Brida, why has it taken so long for it to be available in English?

Re: September 15-19: Paulo Coelho

Dear  Princesinha,

the reason why my book Brida is only being published now in the rest of the world was due to the prerogatives of the publishing houses. I had newer books by the time I started being published abroad (mid 1990's) and this is why only now the right time for Brida appeared.

My nextt read will be "Brida" . Someone told me that was a wonderful read that you can't  put down until its finished. I also would like to ask you , do you ever come to the states for signings. And the next one, if youdo, do you ever come near Virginia. Oh! it would make my world tenfold, if I could meet such an amazing servant of God.  Linda(Va)

I have been trying to phrase the right question ever since I found out that I had a chance to contact you.  I hope this is it.  It seems to me that things run in circles,  if you do everything the way you are supposed to will it stop the process?  Oh,  and do you ever write a novel in response to another author's ?  And why are writers of Portugese so very deep?

Re: September 15-19: Paulo Coelho

My dearest Senior Coelho,

One year ago today I began my journey from St. Jean Pied de Port to Santiago and ultimately Finisterre.  Eleven years ago this month, I read The Alchemist for the first time. I cannot even venture to guess how many ways your words touched my soul. Each time I read The Alchemist, the absolute nature of your message awakens my heart, reminds me of who I am and how I am part of the soul of the universe. It helps me gather courage and strength to follow the omens laid before me... at times, I think of you as a guardian angel, and I thank the Holy Mother for bringing you into my life.

ULTREYA ET SUSEYA!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, your dreams and your life,

Sofia de la Fuente

Dear mwinasu,

I don't know if I understood your question... what do you mean by "doing what you're supposed to do"?

Concerning if I write in response to other authors : yes and no. When I write I do so first and foremost to know myself better. I don't write for others - or else I would be lost.

Yet, of course, some people have a great impact on my thinking : one of them is the argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges. The Zahir for instance was inspired in a short story of his (of the same title).

Re: September 15-19: Paulo Coelho

Dear Paulo, you have probably reached many of your goals for your life and many of your dreams must have already come true. What is an example of a dream or goal that you are still working towards and hoping will come true?

A ] to  learn how to dance well  (from a 1 to 10 scale, I would say I am 2)

B] to learn how to play guitar ( from the same scale, I am definitely 1)

C] spend three months in a monastery, totally isolated from the world ( I already talked to the abbot three years ago, but I am always postponing)

D] a safari in Africa  (politically incorrect, of course)

E] to sponsor a good boxer (I know it sounds politically incorrect, as the previous item,  but boxing for me is the ultimate body dialogue)

F]  to  learn boxing myself

G] being in orbit circling the planet (the Russians are making a business out of it, but I never actually sought the information out)

H] to have dinner with Nelson Mandela (this one I tried, but I did not manage so far)

I] to fly a Mirage (as a passenger, of course)

While  writing this list, I realized that I did most of the things I wanted  (the most recent being a 9.280 kms train journey  from Moscow to Vladivostok, in 2006). And probably I also have some other itens that are so hidden in my heart that I don't even know. But just in case that I remember some more, I will update this list.

Thank you for responding.  I will try to answer your question.  If there is a hole in the roof it will leak inside the house when it rains.  If you do not want everything to get wet you will have to fix the hole,  that is what you are supposed to do. I want to know if I have failed to correctly address a problem that reoccurs.  And if I do find the answer, will it stop.

Re: September 15-19: Paulo Coelho

In the "About the Author" of The Alchemist, you say that a strange man encouraged you to walk the Road of Santiago de Compostela. Is the Road of Santiago de Compostela the same road that Santiago walks in The Alchemist?

Re: September 15-19: Paulo Coelho

When you wrote The Alchemist, did you think about and meticulously refine every metaphor and symbol, or did the words just happen upon the page?

Re: September 15-19: Paulo Coelho

Hello again Mr. Coelho:

I last spoke to you in February to tell you how excited I was to be teaching The Alchemist at the English 12 level.  It was so highly received by my students that I am presently teaching the novel to another English 12 class.  I would like to ask you if you think that Santiago would have eventually found God in the seminary?  One of my students and I were discussing how interesting it would be if you were to write a parallel novel to The Alchemist where Santiago actually does listen to his parents and does attend the seminary.  What would his road be like there?  That could be a very interesting read.  Thank you for bringing such life into my classroom.

Chesney

Chesney, yes and no.

The road to Santiago is a pilgrimage that exists in the North of Spain whilst Santiago's road to the Pyramids passes through the Sahara.

Yet, both paths can be seen as the same since they transform the person doing them. They are both an initiation.

When I wrote the Alchemist, a year later of writing about my pilgrimage to Santiago, I felt the need to tell my story through a metaphor. It's no wonder then that the idea of a journey caught my imagination.

I'm first and foremost a pilgrim writer.

Love
