We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

Enoree,

It's extremely tough for a child to grow up in such a dysfunctional household with not one but two alcoholics.  (Remember, Dan's old sister is an alcoholic, too, along with his father.)  Dan left for the Navy when he was, what?  17, maybe 18.  And then he comes back to visit and it looks as if Eden's taking the same path as his older sister...

If Eden was an alcoholic, too, he couldn't save her.  All he could do was enable her and possibly destroy himself in the process.  I can't fault him for getting out of Dodge as quickly as possible.

Where was Eden's mother while all this was going on, anyway?

Interesting, huh?

Re: Suzanne Brockmann, August 3-7

Hi Suz!  You were the first author that I ever wrote to. I was nervous for Sam and Alyssa. I was astounded that you replied to me as well as reassured that you were not done. To this day, Over the Edge remains as favorite TS book.  It was not the first book that I had read by you, but it was the one that had me hooked.

Because I am now hooked and need my Suz fix, can you tell me how many new books will be out in 2010 and 2011?

Thank you for writing great stories!

Re: Suzanne Brockmann, August 3-7

Suzanne - Thanks so much for sharing the story of your first writing efforts. I love that you were a rock star before you were a ROCK STAR (in the writing world) -- I was a Beatle fan for year (still love them, but now I lean towards Springsteen), and I would have read that book in an instant. Could it be a novella in your short story collection?

One thing I see in these comments over and over again is how invested we are in your characters. We don't just think of them as people in books, we think of them as people. We share their feelings -- when they hurt, we hurt. When they fall in love, we fall right with them. It's quite a gift to be able to write like that, and I'm really glad you discovered it early in your career.

Re: Suzanne Brockmann, August 3-7

I have trouble imagining what it must be like for you, having two authors in the house. Does that make life easier, since you and Ed both understand things like writing deadlines? What happens when you both have new releases at the same time, or if your book tours take you in different directions? Can you tell us some of the good and bad things about working in the same business?

I read Hot Pusuit in 4 hours cover to cover and I have to admit I'm still not fond of serial killer stories, it was even scarier this time being inside the killer's head.  I'm rereading it again because there are a few details I want to reread, especially about Robin babysitting Ash.

I also join in the Decker/Tracy short story begging!!!!

Silence! Hi!! *waving at you from Glendale*. Good to see you here. Missed chatting with you, too.

I did the same read-the-book-in-four-hours thing you did. Loved it. However, my reread will have to wait, because I'm trying to write my first book, and I have this rule... never read an author who could influence my writing while I'm actually trying to write. And Suz is definitely one of those authors (what's she done for my perception on POV... well, I just don't have the words). So until I either a) finish this book or b) come to a natural breaking point, no Suz books for me.

Oh, and the whole Robin babysitting thing? Love it.

Re: Suzanne Brockmann, August 3-7

I had just finished the book when I wrote this and all these characters were still running around in my head so sorry if I sound like I'm talking about real people (really..I'm not crazy I do know this is fiction..really).  But that said I think I feel a little maternal toward Izzy, like he was vulnerable and she was taking advantage.

My favorite couple is Jules and Robin followed by Sam and Alyssa who just bumped Stan and Teri to third with Hot Pursuit.

I also wanted to say hi to Becke---I think we just met recently and traded stories on the spelling of our nicknames. :smileyhappy:

Hi Guys - Anne B here - I'm just reading the comments since I left last night - I'm in on the begging.........

becke_davis - Is there another place (blog/BB) that all of us "Suz-actics" (that doesn't quite roll off the tongue the way I wanted - SB-fanatics???) can get together in- between books? I haven't found any since the BB closed.

Suz - How was Battlestar? I finished Otherwise Engaged last night - do you find that you kind of use parts of characters from your older books in your newer ones? I also loved your "nubnut/s" story.

I'm just rereading this post - sorry about all the different tangents......Anne B

Hey, Anne.

Battlestar was... Well, it was.  Some things didn't work for me, some did.  I'm sad that it ended.  I enjoyed it, but I didn't think the last few eps were among the strongest in the series.  The great eps rocks.  So say we all... <g>

As for the characters, I think it's more that I like to revisit certain character traits.  (Guys who speak before thinking, for example.  Wes, Kenny and Izzy are all similar in that way, yet they're extremely different people -- at least to me!)

Yes Virginia There Really Is a Santa Clause!  Suzanne I am so happy to read, in your own words, that you are continuing to write.  I love your books and look forward to enjoying your future writing adventures.

Anyway, I just wanted to get in on the fave couple discussion.  I remember what you said on Facebook about it being your mini personality quiz and I think what you will find is that I am an indecisive person that is easily swayed!  Basically every book that I read is my fave couple at the time.  I guess if I really pushed it, it would be Max & Gina, but seriously I love all your characters.

As for your characters.  I really have not found a character that I disliked.  Maybe because I read Sam & Alysses?sp? book first I didn't have a problem with Marylou and was happy that she found her own hea.  When I went back and read the other books I just kept remembering that they all found their hea and that they had grown as people.  Actually, one scene that really touched me was when she went over to Kelly's house and felt so lonely and left out.  Really well told IMO.  Also, Izzy?  Love him, especially in ITS, but I don't see him as this guy that desperately needs to grow up.  I see him as a man which means he does dumb things sometimes:smileyhappy:  And Danny.  I don't have a problem with him.  I have been waiting to hear his story and see what is really going on.  I remember another poster commenting once that if Eden was messed up it stood to reason that Danny would be too.  While we might want to imagine the big brother protecting the little siblings I don't think that happens all that often.  I mean there is always talk about how much longer it takes guys to grow up in comparison to girls.

As for a movie/tv deal.  Well, for my husbands sake (he is not a reader) I would love you to have a tv series about TS, but for my own sake I would prefer to keep reading your wonderful books.  I think that I have defined these characters so clearly in my own mind that I would have trouble enjoying anyone elses interpretation.  I am definitely an either/or person which means that if I have seen the movie I don't read the book and vice verse.  Hmmm, I should add that I would love to watch a tv series of yours that was not about TS as it would be new and not coloured by my own interpretation.

Finally, I just wanted to laugh.....numbnut....too funny and so very awful for you.....hard to imagine that after all these years and all the books you have written and your editor? has done this too you.  Still it is one for the books and there is nothing like having friends and family to make you see the humour in it!

Best of luck with the move, the play, and the upcoming books.  I look forward to receiving HP in the next couple of days!

Regards,

Tracey

PS. Sorry such a long post.

Hey, Tracey!

Definitely there's a group of readers who, like you, love all the characters almost equally.  I don't think it makes you indecisive.  Just willing to live in the moment and to quite possibly see the glass as half full.

It's not a "better" thing -- it's just, like I said, a mini personality quiz.  People who are extremely adamant about liking (or disliking) a certain character also aren't better or worse for having those feelings -- I just know something about them from the vehemence of their reaction.   That's all.  <g>

And, just for the record, it wasn't an editor who made the changes -- it was a proof reader.  The editor I'm currently working with completely "gets" my books and my writing style.  She was as aghast as I at the unauthorized changes!

Hugs,

Suz

Hi Suz - In the TS guide you published with ITS you interviewed Ken and Van, and they announced that Van was going to run for Congress. What happened? When bits and pieces of HP came out at first I thought it was Van that was running for office. I still chuckle over the thought of Ken being the "First Man".

I also have to say that I read the authors note before the book and I was heartborken to see "final TS". I'm so glad you will be returning to the series, and I am looking forward to the non-TS books. I love your writing style, especially the thoughts that go through the characters' heads.

Actually, I'd considered bringing both Ken and Van back for this book, but it worked out much better for the conflict (as well keeping as the massive cast of characters from getting too large) to bring in someone completely new.

And it made sense, too, for Van to wait.  Ken's still active duty.  Running a campaign is a crazy time-suck.  It felt right for her to be involved with the campaign of a friend, while waiting until Ken was out of the Navy to run for office herself.

Thanks for your kind words -- I love writing in that style -- really getting into each POV character's mind and seeing the world through their eyes!

-- Suz

Hey, it IS nice to see you -- to see everyone who's here from my old BB.

I'm glad you enjoyed the book!  Hearing that someone's giving a book a re-read is the ultimate compliment for an author!  So thank you for that!

I'm having fun reading all your comments! I'm excited about the possibility of a Troubleshooters-based TV series. I'm thinking of NCIS meets JAG meets 24 meets . . . well, I'm not sure there is another "meets." Meets Suzanne, I guess. I haven't seen a show with "real" characters or real sexual tension in quite awhile. TV knows how to to action, tension and suspense, but I rarely see romance done well on television. I don't even see it done well that often in movies, which is why I treasure my favorites so much!

I think that may be because in television and movies, it's all in front of our faces without much left to the imagination. In books, great authors like Suzanne give us enough description to recognize the characters but leave enough "spaces" in those descriptions that we can fill in the blanks with things we like. That's one reason -- and I know some of you hate these covers -- that I like those "no head" book covers. I want to keep the faces of the hero and heroine in my imagine. The models are great, but rarely portray the hero or heroine the way I do in my head. And actors get it right even less.

Becke,

You should check out FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.  The coach and his wife, Tammy, are two of my all-time favorite TV characters.  (You've got to start from the beginning though.)

Still, it's not a romance, because the story starts with them already married.

My favorite TV romance has to be Buffy and Angel.  (yes, I'm an Angel, not  a Spike.  Not that I don't like Spike, I do.  But for me, it's Angel for Buffy.)

(And I'm a fan of faceless people on book covers, too!)

I think a lot of us are relieved that characters we like may yet get their POV story. I totally understand you needing a break, and I'm looking forward to your new/old book and the short story collection. But I'll also be waiting with bated breath for your return to the Troubleshooters. After you've had a chance to relax and refresh, I'll be very curious to see what direction you'll take us next!

[ Edited ]

I've been a huge fan of Kyle Chandler since he starred in a series called Homefront, years and years ago. I don't watch much TV but it looks like I'll have to rent the whole series of Friday Night Lights!

And speaking of proofreading (well, a couple posts back), I just noticed I wrote that I like to keep the features of the heroes and heroines in my "imagine." (*bangs head on wall*)
