About the Book
About the Author
| Born in 1707, Henry Fielding rose from a notoriety for writing somewhat scandalous theatrical satires to a novelist, beginning with first a parody of Samuel Richardson's successful Pamela, recasting the moralistic tale as the adventure of an unprincipled young woman, entitled Shamela. This was followed by a series of novels touching on themes of artifice, morality, and hypocrisy, culminating in the picaresque masterpiece Tom Jones in 1749. He later became the London Chief Magistrate and established London's first police force, the Bow Street Runners. He died in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1754. |
