Good Classics?

I would like to know really good classics..

Anything by Dickens, Jane Austen, or the Brontes.  Vanity Fair by Thackeray.  Tom Jones by Fielding.  And lots and lots of others!

I guess you wouldn't agree with the sentiment expressed by Mark Twain about Jane Austin, in a letter to Joseph Twichell, 13 September 1898 : "Every time I read 'Pride and Prejudice' I want to dig her up and beat her over the skull with her own shin-bone."

Some "newer" Classics: Catcher in the Rye, 1984, Animal Farm, Watership Down

I'm with dulcinea on her picks. I favor Dickens and Wilke Collins also.

I've loved several by H. G. Wells, such as The Time Machine, and The Island of Dr. Moreau. Also 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne. And Treasure Island is wonderful.

Also, I have to recommend our versions of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz series, which has all the original illustrations. I know most people won't believe this, but I'd recommend the Oz books in general, and our versions in particular, even if I wasn't involved in publishing them. The Oz stories are wonderful, and it's a crying shame that many people read the free versions that are out there without realizing they are missing all the illustrations. We've published 5 so far (6th coming soon).
