The human being gradually lost his tail, and gradually developed an intellect- so goes the theory of evolution. There might be balance in the "axial skeleton"- that is , what we lost in our tails, we gained in our skulls to protect our brain matter, or lack thereof
.
But humanity found stability in the human mind- memory, in particular- so we "anchor" things like the "Hispaniola" in them, perhaps writing things down on a map to help us remember the things that we cannot. And there might be negative repercussions from "anchoring" some kind of training or an education in the human mind.
During the 1800's and Stevenson's lifetime, western civilization anchored itself more greatly in the human intellect, and there may have been a limit, or a saturation point, to what they could anchor in the human mind.....

The Fed Reserve also uses algorithms to determine to raise and lower interest rates, which directly impacts the printing up of our money. An algorithm is used to balance the economy as much as fed reserve decides on using one or adehering to one. Recently, in light of the crash of 08', the fed reserve had to deviate from normal the normal algorithms, and devise other "innovative" measures (and they were a bit controversial too, I should say, for many people
lol) to "balance" the economy.

"Deviate From normal algorithms"- FYI, for example, some believed that the fed reserve went way beyond it scope of power with the creation of Maiden Lane- a limited liability company which bailed out AIG, Bear Sterns, etc. Chad
