Re: 2011 - What Are You Reading?

I found three of her books at a used book store.  She was an American mystery writer.  Most of what I've been reading of her was first published in early part of the 1900s.  The After House was first published in 1914, and it did have a sort of gothic feel to it, but it's more of a mystery.  I'm really enjoying them.  I have been finding the versions published in the 50s and 60s.

I've also been reading a lot of the Perry Mason books by Erle Stanley Gardner.

@Ryan_G where have you found all those old books? The price says they are from the 1960's maybe? Are they good? The covers have a gothic feel to them.

Went to the library today to get another book on CD for my daily commute. It really makes the drive go by faster. So tomorrow I will start

Does anyone read nonfiction. I see almost all of them reading fiction. Wonder why. I have nothing against fiction but someone should be reading nonfiction too.

I read fiction because I read to escape. I live fiction all day long and when I read I want to just get away and not have to think and analyze so much. I do read some non fiction but it tends to feel too much like work and I read to relax.

I do understand escape and thanks for the response, Kathy.  On the other hand we cannot avoid reality.  The real health with healthy heart, flexible joints etc will eventually demand attention. The soon the better, IMO.

I read a little bit of both because I like to be both entertained and/or learn something.  Frankly, I'm just impressed if someone reads at all.  There just seem to be so many people these days that don't.  I've also noticed that reading tastes evolve as people evolve (mine certainly have) and their needs change.  For example, right now I'm currently in a Master's program and am reading some heavy duty non-fiction stuff and when my book club chooses a non-fiction book I just cringe--It just seems to be too much for my brain right now (even though I would more than likely enjoy it at another time).

I am also in a high stress vocation and have several co-workers who read a lot of YA stuff which I would never read,  but If it helps someone's stress level to decrease who am I to say "not a good choice?"  If it relieves their stress, it's good for the body. Basically, I guess it's all relative.  Might your perspective be from that of advocating for your books?

Well, whatever relieves stress is good for you and everyone else.  I wish you all the best for your academics. I believe in what I write but no intention to force my ideas on anyone. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and please take care.
