Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

Re: Amazon to acquire GoodReads - thoughts?

Yes, Alan, your post.

It's news to me that there are already Bookipedia type sites.

Also, Small Demons, which is about taking a look at the elements in books (places, characters, real people, food/drinks, etc.) and connecting those elements to each other, and to other books.

Thanks FlyingToastr & Keriflur.

I don't like Wikipedia's other efforts much (wikiquotes, etc.). I think books need a site built by people who understand books and who built it from the ground up for books.

Re: Amazon to acquire GoodReads - thoughts?

[ Edited ]

I am one who deleted my data from GR. I do not "hate" Amazon. I did not do reviews but did rate what I read. I usually only get $0.00 e-books from them. I think I spent a grand total of $30.00 or less last year. I also usually did not use it much for reviews since I use RT Booklovers. I did use it to interact with the authors thou.

My issue was the monopoly that is being formed. When they are the only one who publishes, reviews, and sells we will have a big problem. I seem to remember my history about other monopolies that took all the money and stopped competition. Amazon may do things well, but in the end I see us all losing if it continues to grow unchecked. My father was part of the breakup of AT&T and the Bell's. I remember, I wonder if it is going to happen again with Amazon.

Auntykatkat,

True. Very True.

Nothing good can come out of it if the same company does reviews, sells books, publishes books, sells ereaders.

It'll be a neat little monopoly.

Anyone know anything about BookLikes.com? It appears they're pretty new.  Thoughts?

They are new. In fact, they're hoping to launch in a couple of weeks.

Actually they have been around for a while and just changed their look last year.  See this blog post for more info. http://haroldhanson.booklikes.com/post/1267/new_look_to_book_likes

I am checking out the other sites a bit more before I make a move from Goodreads, don't want to go to something I like even less

Re: Amazon to acquire GoodReads - thoughts?

I'm resurrecting this thread, does anyone know if this went through?  Someone posted it wasn't supposed to go through until June.  I haven't seen any noticeable differences in Goodreads.

Also, anyone found another site they'd like to recommend.  I have a Librarything account and I just set up a lilib account to see what it's like, but with 1800 books currently in my Goodreads account, I'm not looking forward to trying to move stuff to another site.  Also, the integration between Calibre and Goodreads makes adding my books so very easy.

I guess I'll try exporting some of my books from Goodreads to a csv file, then importing into Librarything, but so far, it seems so very manual and I don't want to spend all my time cataloging my books, I'd rather read them.
