Re: Authors are Suing Self-Pub Service Author Solutions

From the Article:  In July of last year Penguin purchased Author Solutions for a reported $116 million .....

Since Penguin's owned Author Solutions for less than a year, I'd be interested in knowing when the three authors who filed the suit did business with AS. Not that that excuses fraudulent practices on the part of AS - like promising services and completely not delivering them. But I'm still curious.

Is this a publisher at all? I thought this was just a printer and well known as a marginal offering? What is the generally accepted definition of publisher? If they were selling services to authors, when do you cross the line to publisher? Is this just a vanity press that re cast itself to find a new group of suckers? I am not aware of any sucessfull DTB for self publishing, that is why all the self pub action is in e books, right?
