B&N says: no Amazon-published books in our stores

Reports are all over the 'Net that B&N has announced that Amazon-published books will not be stocked in B&N stores. They will, however, be available online through bn.com.

Here is the statement, attributed to B&N Chief Merchandising Officer Jaime Carey:

Barnes & Noble has made a decision not to stock Amazon published titles in our store showrooms. Our decision is based on Amazon’s continued push for exclusivity with publishers, agents and the authors they represent. These exclusives have prohibited us from offering certain eBooks to our customers. Their actions have undermined the industry as a whole and have prevented millions of customers from having access to content. It’s clear to us that Amazon has proven they would not be a good publishing partner to Barnes & Noble as they continue to pull content off the market for their own self interest. We don’t get many requests for Amazon titles, but If customers wish to buy Amazon titles from us, we will make them available only online at bn.com.

A number of independent bookstores have made the same decision, and have also canceled personal appearances by Amazon-signed authors. One can only hope that with B&N joining in, the loss of shelf visibility will give authors pause before signing exclusive deals with Amazon.

This really isn't that much different than the policy regarding print-on-demand books (from Lulu.com, AuthorHouse, Xlibris, etc).  They aren't stocked in the brick-and-mortar stores but if a customer is interested they can be ordered in the store as a ship-to-home item, shipping directly from the warehouse.

Books-A-Million has joined in. That takes yet another major outlet away from authors who choose to sign with Amazon instead of a separate publisher.

BAM also sells the Nook. This is good. Amazon has over stepped the bounds and it needs to be curbed.

The most stunning thing about all this--just as a business decision--is that Barnes and Noble is choosing to squeeze itself out of the Billy Ray Cyrus market.  Now, mind you, I was just as surprised as any of you that Billy Ray signed on with Amazon to publish his upcoming memoirs, rather than with, oh, say, Oxford University Press, but does B&N really want to confront Amazon so badly that they're willing to take this hit to both their bottom line and the prestige of their bookshelves?  We'll all have to order Hillbilly Heart online or at some other retailer of literature.  I just don't understand what's behind some of Barnes and Noble's moves lately.

Somehow, though it will be difficult, I will have to learn to live without Billy Ray's literary masterpiece.  As I normally try to read all the major Pulitzer Prize contenders, this will require deep and painful sacrifice on my part.
