I've only had my Nooks for a few months now and don't have all that many ebooks stored on it, but already I've noticed something "missing" from my ebooks: the dust jacket summary of the story. Though familiar with a particular author, I have already forgotten the story line of some of the stored books and it would be helpful to be able to glance at the summary material (right on the Nook) in deciding what I'm in the mood to read.
Perhaps it's just the ebooks that I've read so far (both purchased and borrowed from the libraries), but I was wondering if there are any publishers that routinely put that material in their electronic versions of publications. Is anyone familiar with why such material is not routinely (if that is actually the case) included in the electronic version of published books?
Obviously, it's not included in what's bound between the covers, but it seems it could easily be included. At first I thought that it might be that it's not part of the content of the copyrighted material and might be handled differently, but then neither is some of the material that the publisher does include between the covers of DTBs and also in ebooks.

You know that you can double-tap any B&N title from any Library screen to get more information about the book, right? Wi-fi has to be on. You'll get a compact view of the book's catalog page, including a description (on the tab labeled "Overview"). It may or may not be the same as the dust jacket description, but it does provide some help.
BTW, the double-tap technique is useless for sideloaded material. It just shows you the name and location of the file. It would be mighty nice if it could be configured to show some metadata for sideloaded books too.

It'd also be nice if you could see this info without being connected to wifi. I used to be able to, and then the ability went away with a software upgrade...

Yes thanks, I am aware of the double tap option. My Wi-Fi is usually off, and I do deal with a lot of sideloaded material.
I was mainly curious as to why the dust jacket material might not be included. After all, I assume there was a certain amount of effort already expended to write and edit the material and make it "enticing". Of course, if you have the ebook on your reader, you already bought it or borrowed it from the library and I guess there's no more need to entice. ![]()
Just a question I had based on the lack of the summary data included as part of the electronic "packaging."

That would be my guess. The dust jacket has a bunch of stuff designed to entice you to buy the book. Once you've bought it.... ![]()

I have found this to be the case for all the books I have downloaded. I feel like the synopsis provided for an e-book just isn't as good as the dust jacket's. For some reason, I always find it lacking. In fact, lots of times when I browse a particular author, I can't really determine whether I've read something or not. I have to say that it is my only complaint in switching to an e-reader. In a bookstore, I can always tell if I've read something, but with e-books, I never feel confident about it. Even reading the sample doesn't always make me certain. I think part of it is the no return policy - I don't want to spend money on something I've already read.

As a general rule, the summary provided for a book is the same regardless of the format. You can test this by reading summaries on the website.

Too often the summary used on the website is far better than what's printed on the dust jacket. If I see one more dust jacket that shows nothing but quotes from reviews, I'll... put the book right back on the shelf, like I always do.

Regardless of the similarities or differences between the dust jacket summary and the web page summary, it would be nice to have some type of summary as an integral component of the ebook.
Just as a reminder to those of us with short or limited memories. ![]()

And it is most annoying when the quotes are about a different book by the same author! ![]()
