I just got a newsletter - I don't want it. Went to uncheck, and found out there were communications that unchecking didn't apply to. Therefore, you are spammers. That is where all email will go and I will complain on FB and Twitter. I like my Nook, but only read stuff in the public domain.

Before you call someone "spammers" and go bad-mouthing them all over the Twitterverse, you might want to back up your assertion that's a little more fact-ish.
What "newsletter" are you talking about?
Is this content that is being pushed to your device or something ending up in your e-mail's in-box?
As a NOOK owner, I've never seen anything that I thought constituted "spam," so I'm not exactly sure what you've got your shorts in a twist over.

This is on the bottom of the page.
- Newsletter and Alert preferences, which are managed here.
- Emails sent by your local Barnes & Noble Store Manager - see Privacy Policy for details.
- Emails sent by Sparknotes - see Privacy Policy for details.
- Emails sent by Zinio.
I don't want any of them and I don't see any opt-out. Therefore, it's spam

NOTE: Changes to your Communications Preferences do not affect:

- Emails sent by Zinio.

And you did go and manage the newsletter and alerts at that link - right?!
And you did go and see what the privacy policy is for the others- right?!
You just have to go to different areas. Not too difficult.

The two areas which immediately raised red-flags for me was the section of Sparknotes' Privacy Policy section which read:
1. What is the personal information that we collect?
Personal information is your name in combination with other information that we collect about you. For example, personal information can include your name in combination with your e-mail address, billing address, shipping address, phone number, or credit card information.
and
(b) Information automatically collected
There are circumstances in which we automatically receive and collect personal information from you. The most common sources of this information include:
* Cookies
* Pixel tags or clear Graphics Interchange Format files, known as GIFs
* NOOK
* Occasionally from business partners, contractors, shared databases, and other third parties
For your convenience, we have provided a summary description of each of these circumstances below."
Pixel tags is a euphemism for web bug, a hidden element within e-mails which monitors users without their knowledge for marketing purposes. Unfortunately, it is currently legal, albeit morally bankrupt.

Thank you. I read the same. I'm going to follow this until I figure out what I want to do.
Sparknotes will be listed in NoScript. in fact, it's already blocked. I don't keep cookies or history, and images are turned off in Firefox.

For sparknotes, you first have to sign up for the messages to get them, if you don't then you wont. Secondly, Making BN a badguy because they collect email data would mean that most retail companies now are bad guys, its a way to get sales, info and yes, find out what people like...
Its not some secret conspiracy to take over your life, its a book store.
I am sure if you do not want any communication, there is a way to call BN's customer support and have yourself removed, but if you have a nook and you use the nook, I would assume you would at least like to hear about nook developments.

Hey hey hey - there are lots of problems with the Nook Color & people need to know what other users are experiencing. So perhaps she doesn't have another word for what she thinks 'spam' is. Just like a weed is only a weed if you don't want it....anyway - she is probably not incorrect because the tech dept told me they had an issue a while back that blasted out 2010 magazine issues - so that lady may have considered that spam!

it's true. they SPAM me too, and now the only thing left to do in order to get barnes and noble to stop contacting me is to CALL and tell them to take me off the blasted mailing list.
UNDERSTAND THIS. i didn't even sign up for this- they have my email because they took over borders, THAT'S the only reason.
