Re: Julie, The Average Nook Owner....

No wonder I can't find an app I really want and that would be useful. I'm kind of shocked that Julie is thought of as someone who has no use for USEFUL apps that would make her life easier. that she is empty headed and only thinks of fashion, etc. I guess I'm one of those people who forks over $250 for a device but lives in fear of dropping it, so my number one priority would NOT be making it fun for my kids to play with. It might be a temporary babysitter for the kids, but really, what does mom do with that time if the kids have her ereader? Housework? NOT ME!! I would buy them something made for kids and that caters to them instead. I would want MY $250 READER catered to ME, to make MY life easier, to cater to MY needs and give me hours of reading enjoyment.

Moms already feel like their entire life is dictated by their childs needs and wants. They need something for MOM too. That makes MOM's life easier and gives them time to relax. To make them feel they are important too. Happy moms raise happy children.

And if BN is concentrating on helping MOM provide ways for her KIDS to enjoy her ereader instead of the mom getting to use it, what are they doing to attract more male users?

Re: Julie, The Average Nook Owner....

My understanding is that most companies see it as more important to fully hook their target market rather than expanding their market reach to those outside of their "average customer" demographics.  The fear is that they'll alienate their average customer.  Also, some companies see it as their niche.

Well, as a user lacking the characteristics of the majority of Nook owners, this explains the "Nook Daily Find" selections.

Re: Julie, The Average Nook Owner....

It's interesting that no one in the forums has said, hey, that's me, I'm a woman in that age range with kids who fits the profile.  This leads me to believe that possibly most of the forum users are outside of the demographic, and that's why they ignore us when we ask for things like better shelving and cross-device wishlist access.

Well, if >51% of the users are women, that sets that part of the profile.  Add a whole lot of teen and twenty-something readers, balanced by a whole bunch of senior citizens like my mom (who had seven kids), who love the large-print capabilities, and you get an average age of forty-something and three kids.  Right?

Average does not mean typical.

No, but usually when marketing is looking at a demographic it's not done by averaging age.  Their target demographic really is that age range.

Re: Julie, The Average Nook Owner....

Female apps??

- an app that's really a talking children's book for when you are stuck in traffic going to the hair salon

- an app that's really nothing more than wallpaper... oooooh! PRETTY!

- an app that says that you will be spotty today and need to break out the heavy pads for tomorrow

- an app that reassures you that you look just fine in those Mom Jeans

- an app that lets you announce to the world where you are and how you are feeling RIGHT.THIS.SECOND!

You mean all those apps? That's why, as a guy, I made my own CM7 card long ago and spend most of my time using the android side of my Nook instead of the B&N side. As for the kids, they can have the $50 VTech to play with. No way that they're going to get a $200 tablet to trash.

LOL.  Please tell me that #3 and #4 aren't actual apps in the B&N store. :smileysurprised:

In all fairness, #5 is Facebook, or Twitter, or a number of other apps that guys use just as much as women.

You make a good point. Although I am a woman, I feel that BN's attitude needs to improve on how they view their  "target market".  I bet if we came up with a John, the  Average Barnes and Noble Executive they woudn't like that either. IMHO

I will be good and not start that list. I keep hearinh my mothers voice asking me what Thumper had to tell his mama. :smileylol:

I was being a little factious with #4. Didn't actually find #3 in the Nook Store, but searching that place for anything is so horribly broken that I may have just missed it. If you search over at the android market you will find that those apps do in fact exist :smileysurprised:

We need an app that allows us to search and find stuff in the app store :smileywink:
