I've heard you get can ebooks from the library. Does anyone know the specifics on this? Which format and how does it work on the Nook?

Check your library's web site. Most libraries that lend e-books do so through a contract with a company called OverDrive. OverDrive supplies e-books in Adobe EPUB format, which is the same format used by most e-book vendors other than Amazon, B&N, and Apple.
Here are instructions on using Adobe Digital Editions software for dealing with Adobe EPUB format:
Note: most of the big publishers restrict what e-books are available to libraries. Here's a run-down on the 'Big 6' US trade publishers:
- Random House — no restrictions
- HarperCollins — library must re-purchase e-book after 26 lends
- Hachette — no recent e-books
- Penguin — no recent e-books
- Simon & Schuster — no e-books at all
- Macmillan — no e-books at all
