Lawrence Ferlinghetti is born in Yonkers, New York. As co-founder of City Lights Bookstore, Ferlinghetti originally published Allen Ginsberg's Howl in his Pocket Poets Series.

 

March 24, 1993

John Hersey, acclaimed author of Hiroshima, dies in Key West, Florida. Hersey was at onetime Sinclair Lewis' personal secretary.

Flannery O'Connor is born in Georgia. Brad Gooch's biography of O'Connor was recently released to very strong reviews.

Kate DiCamillo, the author of Because of Winn-Dixie and The Tale of Despereaux, is born in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania.

Robert Frost is born in San Francisco, California. Frost is buried in his beloved New England (Bennington, VT) and his gravestone reads, ""I had a lover's quarrel with the world."

Walt Whitman dies in Camden, New Jersey. Pound called Whitman, "America's Poet." 

 

March 26, 1930

Gregory Corso, Beat icon, is born in New York City. Ginsberg called Corso, "the poet's poet."

I blame The Simpsons for my inability to think of Walt Whitman under any circumstance without immediately thinking of Homer Simpson rhythmically kicking his headstone as hard as possible and screaming, "Damn you, Walt Whitman! I-hate-you-Walt-freakin'-Whitman! Leaves of Grass, my [expletive deleted]!"
