Re: Patience my eye!

I'm using I.E. 6, here at work, where I can see avatars and don't have a lot of choice as far as upgrading goes.  I use 8 at home, but I don't recall having any problem with the avatars when I was on here yesterday.  I think I would have noticed, but can't be entirely certain.

Perhaps once you reach some sort of bitching quota, you can no longer see smiles?  :smileywink:

What tha?!?!
Ok, if that was a joke, it's really a bad so not funny joke. We come here to get the problems off our chests and give a heads up to the techs.
I know for a fact all of us are b*tching, but we are staying here dispite all the problems. So if you don't want to read the b*tching, don't read the b*tching thread. (smile)

oh and I can see the :smileyindifferent: just fine. But never until after I've posted, if that helps.

Silly me, I figured the threads about the changes and some of the glitches were meant to notify all members about problems and possibly for a bit of helpful suggestions and constructive criticism.  I didn't realize they were expressly meant for petulant, unproductive bitching.  I guess the B&N staff should just be grateful for the useful, helpful posts members have made on this and similar threads, as the threads, evidently, are meant for mere bitching.

**Edit**

And yes, of course I was joking above.  I don't really think a member's relentless bitching and empty threats to leave the book club could really make her unable to see smiles.

(shaking head) Not how you were comming across. Your coment felt more like a stop being upset b*tch, than anything else. Since so far all you've posted are "I'm not having any problems" and "perhaps your problems are caused by your unproductive b*tching".

So if I'm taking it the wrong way I apologise.

All I'm saying is that if b*tching makes a user feel better and stay with us through the problems, not only am I all for it. But that no one should be snide towards those users.

Well said TB.  And those who have been justifiably complaining here are people who come onto these boards frequently, often daily, to post constructively in ongoing book clubs, not b*tchy fly-by-nights taking a poke at other users.
Perhaps smileys should disappear until we have something to smile about?

I was just fooling around with the above, but to be serious Choisya, I think I contribute enough here as a member to have a valid place in noting what I think to be wildly inappropriate conduct.

I don’t think it requires 10,000 plus posts to recognize the substantive difference in the content of constructive posts, outlining actual usage issues with the forum (what I thought these threads were meant for) and the tone throughout many of your posts.

And for me it’s not an issue of "bitchy fly-by-night take a poke at other users" comments.  I’ve always been sensitive to how awfully customer service representatives are sometimes treated.  Besides a short stint as a kid, I’ve never worked retail, so it’s hard for me to talk from experience.  But I’ve been shocked by the sometimes reprehensible conduct I’ve witnessed, from otherwise seemingly courteous and considerate people, towards customer service representatives.  I recognize this as a product of the customer’s power inherent in the long-established “customer is always right” policy.  I guess I’m just shocked by how aggressively some wield that power, and particularly you as a non-capitalist consumer.

I do understand that B&N provides a product here, and as members/customers they hope to retain, we do maintain some negotiating power.  But, I guess I see this similar to the power construct in the employer/employee relationship.  Certainly, in most scenarios, the employer holds the majority of the power in the relationship.  But wielding that power in a responsible way, I think, demands respect from both parties.  The employer/employee relationship optimally works when there is a mutual respect.  Likewise with the customer/customer service provider relationship.

And, I guess, frankly, considering other appeals for the worker you’ve advocated on this very forum, and considering the difficult economy, and serious job retention concerns, workers are faced with today, I was stunned you would call for peoples’ jobs, merely for glitches on a still largely operational internet book forum.  These are, after all, peoples’ livelihoods we’re talking about here.  And, at least some of those include people we’ve interacted with quite extensively on this forum.

I don’t think my sub-1000 post count precludes me from noting an instance when I think the “customer is always right” policy is being abused.  Particularly when it is abused toward customer service personnel who have been nothing but courteous, attentive and hard-working.

Re: Smile-less

I was wrong in my last post.  I cannot see the avatars at home, where I use I.E. 8.  I can, however, see the smilies.

And yesterday I could not get onto this Community Room board at all.  I was able to get into every other forum I tried, but repeated attempts over several hours to get into this one only resulted in a 'Page not found' page.

Re: Sign In Issues

Jon,

Yesterday, I used the computer in our ceramic's office, the one I always use when I'm there, and brought up the B&NBC page.  It signed me in, automatically.  I have never checked the "remember me" option on that computer.  I have only check that option here, where I live.  It's convenient to by pass logging in, at home, but I don't like it to remember me when I'm using a public computer.  Earth to Space Ship, I think we have a problem.

Re: Sign In Issues

You're right, it's certainly not supposed to Remember You like that unless you check Remember Me.  It's possible that the community cookie isn't being cleared properly - though your shopping cookie will time out after an hour automatically.  We're still working on Sign In issues and unfortunately its behavior is thus a bit, well, funky.  In the meantime I would suggest  that you be sure to log out completely when you are using a public computer and are done with your session (that's really a good habit to get into for any site).
