Re: What order are gift cards used?

So it's been two weeks; I just bought another book and the payment came off the card with the HIGHEST balance. BN! WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FIX THIS?

First you would have to find someone at BN to even acknowledge that it's a problem.  They never have yet.

Some good speculation can be made that it's deliberate.  They're hoping that you'll give up and just remove the card with the lowest balance without draining it all the way.  Or so it might seem.  Why else would they have changed it this way?  They used to just debit the cards in the order they were added to the account.

Re: What order are gift cards used?

Spoke to Cust Service again (this time via the Live Chat). I've been assured that this problem will be fixed. I was also told that if you call B&N on the 1-800-THE-BOOK number they can consolidate the card balances even without the card numbers, once you verify your membership/identity (they can't do it over the live chat for security reasons). So I'll be dealing with that probably tomorrow (can't do it immediately; off to see Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers at Red Rocks and I have to leave pretty much right now).

Still not fixed! This has gone past ridiculous and out the other side. I feel yet another call to customer service coming on.

Re: What order are gift cards used?

This has happened to me twice.  After purchasing 3 books I still have this stupid 9 cents on one card.  I called customer service and they said they couldn't consolidate the cards.  They said the amount will ALWAYS be taken from the largest card.  That doesn't even make sense.  You will never get rid of them without going over and using your credit card.  I have two gift cards sitting here ready to be added to my account, but I can't add them until the 9 cents is used.  This has to be a sales tactic by B&N to either get you to delete the remaining money on the card or to encourage you to buy something because it would be an easy programming fix.

Re: What order are gift cards used?

I have gotten in the habit of periodically using up the last of the old cards (even though it means a charge on my credit card) before I put the new card onto the account.  Right now I have $4 and $8 on two cards, so I figure my next two purchases will use them up and I can then add the next card.

Re: What order are gift cards used?

Because the B&N store is about 2 miles away, I have just gotten in the habit of taking all my cards there and having them all put on one. I just got one as a gift yesturday and am expecting 2 more for Christmas, will take them and my one that only has a couple of $ on it and have them all consolidated to one.

That's a good solution for people who have a B&N nearby. I don't like the fact that it's not one by one.
