I occasionally get ebooks from my library (I download the .acsm file form the library's Overdrive link) and use Adope Digital Editions to download the epub. When I buy epub books, I have always done if from B&N except once when one was a lot cheaper from Sony. So I had to download the Sony Reader app and was then able to install the Sony epub book onto my Nook. All is well so far.
Tonight I downloaded an .acsm form my library, started up ADE and in the middle of the process ADE asked me to download a s/w update to ADE. So I did and had to restart my Macintosh. When I booted back up (installing the update and rebooting may be a red herring and have nothing to do with my problem), I went to the downloaded .acsm file and double clicked on it. The Sony Reader started up instead of ADE. Not only that, but when I plugged in my Nook, the Sony Reader app doesn't find it or recognize it. So the epub and associated .epub.xml files are in the Reader folder (and not the ADE folder). I can read the new book on the Sony Reader app, but can't transfer it. If I click on the .acsm file (from Finder) again, the Sony Reader program starts (if not already running) and says "this book is already in your library."
When I start up ADE and try to add the new book to my ADE library (so that I can transfer it to my Nook) I point the browse window that comes up to my "Downloads" directory where the .acsm file is located, but the filename is backgrounded grey, not colored, and I can't click on it and so can't add it to my ADE library.
Sorry for the long story, maybe it isn't as complciated as I make it out to be, but how can I (1) change the default application for .acsm files from the Sony Ready to ADE? or, barrying that (2) how can I get the Sony Reader app to recognize my nook. I've tried starting the Sony Reader app first and then connecting Nook via USB to my Mac, and vice versa. In neither case do I get a link/logo/symbo for my Nook in the Sony Reader window.
Thanks!

Sounds like Sony hijacked the file association as it runs ADE within it's own software. To return the file association back to ADE:
1) right click on your .acsm file
2) click "Open with"
3) click "Choose default program" (ignore the auto-select for ADE, this is important for step 5)
4) click Adobe Digital Editions
5) make sure "Always used the selected program to open this kind of file" is CHECKED
6) click OK
7) ADE should autoload the file now, and continue to do so until you run Sony Reader again. The next time you run Sony Reader check for file associations in it's settings (I'm not familiar with Sony Reader) and see if you can get it to stop auto-associating
Correct me if anyone knows of a simpler way, but this is how I would do it ![]()
