are you lost (on purpose)?

love books like Crazy for the storm, Into the Wild, Into thin air, Adrift... books about survivalism, triumph in the face of tragedy whilst on adventure, or getting lost on purpose in search of adventure.

any book clubs like that? or books revolving around said topics that you can recommend?

cheers!

Adrift. A man sailed his craft and was stranded on his raft for a long time. It is old. All of the sail around the world small yacht books. You can go to the library and look these up by subject. Home of The Blizzard. It's about Douglas Mawson when he and his team were in Antarctica in 1912.

These are effectively adventure short stories.

Also, not really adventure stories, but I enjoyed The Falling Season, which is all about Aspen's mountain rescue team.

And, Over the Edge, which tells the story of four American climbers who where kidnapped and held by rebels.

Re: are you lost (on purpose)?

I've read quite a number of books in that vein.  Tim Cahill's compilations of his stories for Outside Magazine are really good, Jaguars Ripped My Flesh or A wolverine is Eating My Leg are 2 that come to mind.  Check out books about Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated Antarctic explorations aboard the Endurance.  Sailing Around the World Alone by Slocum.  2 Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana is excellent.  A couple of fictional adventures come to mind as well, of course, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.  Patricks Obrian's series Master and Commander is awesome, it's 20 books but they move fast.  My library had them all, so I didn't have to buy any.  Of course some of the old classics like Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island are classics for a reason. Moby Dick...let's see, some of Somerset Maugham's books are set in exotic locations.
