Do you mean - can you add a sim card for connectivity (3G or 4G) when wifi isn't available?  If so, I don't believe you can.  The best plan there would be to use another device that has 3G or 4G connectivity as a wifi network.  You can use a mifi device or certain cell phones for this.

I use the trick keriflur mentions.

I have an andoid phone with FoxFi installed.  That turns the phone into a wifi hotspot.  My NST attaches to that and the phone uses 4G to pull the data.

Be warned, it eats the batter on the phone pretty quickly if it's not plugged in but it's great for the few random times that I wanted a book right then.  I've even driven my desktop that way for an entire day when my router went out (gosh, I miss the days of unlimited phone data).

I use FreedomPop as a mobile wifi.  When my son discovered that I bought my ipad and nexus tablet without data plans, since I use them 90%+ of the time in easy reach of home or hotel wifi, he got me a FreedomPop for wifi at other times.  It is small, and works well with my nook too.  You might want to look into this as a possibility.
