Re: how come bn ebooks are more expensive than hardcovers?

I just downloaded 2 free books from obooko that look really interesting.

I definitely would not let the price of books from B&N discourage me from buying a nook.

Between other eBook sites and the library you can read for free or up to whatever personal limit you have set for yourself.

That's what a big corporation exists for: make more money. Expecting them to do otherwise is pointless.

I thought kindle and nook book prices are about the same and are determined by the author.  If you don't think, Doug then it is not so.  Because you're one of the most knowledgeable at BN boards.

I have a question for you Doug (sorry, not related to this thread): How do you add clickable links to your signature?  Thanks and all the best.

I too am extremely disappointed with the cost of books for ereader. Don't get me wrong, I love the Nook and enjoy reading w/it. However, I have a list of paperback books I want to read. I can find many of them at Costco or BJ's for $5. Yet if I want them from the Nook they are $9.99 or more. I have been able to search and find 1 or 2 for $5 on nook. Then the drawback is I can't loan to anyone unless they have a Nook.

I do use my local library. However, I am usually #25 on a wait list of 50 :smileyhappy:  Then once I am eligible for the book, I only have 5 days in which to download and then only 14 days to read. It's a lot of pressure! They need to drop the prices a bit. And perhaps the libraries could offer a bit longer lending period.

You need to talk to your library.  4 of the 5 libraries I use have up to 21 day lending periods on most books, only one has a maximum of 14 days.

And I doubt the publishers are going to agree to a price cut any time soon since the eBooks seem to be selling just fine with prices where they are right now.

Just for proof-Amazon has the new maeve Binchy selling for their Kindle for $12.43-2 dollars cheaper than the Nook.

Sometimes it is the opposite. On B&N I purchased "They Signed Away Their Lives" for $5.50 while Amazon had it for $9.99 approx. The cheaper cost was for a week so it depends on when you look sometimes.

Re: how come bn ebooks are more expensive than hardcovers?

Right now I am using 2 library networks. Minuteman and Boston Public Library. Both have option of 7 or 14 days. I would love 21 days. 14 is a little tight at times. For example, I have to finish current book by tomorrow at 1 pm. I am close, but definately have to plan on reading for a good amount of time today/ tomorrow a.m. It adds pressure to something that should be enjoyable. Minuteman is a network of libraries. Would I call my local library? Is it the library itself who decides on lending periods? And what other sites are available for free or low cost books? thanks!!!

I believe it is the agreement the library makes with Overdrive that decides the lending period.

My guess would be, the longer the lending period the higher rate the library has to pay Overdrive.

When I download the library book I just read that an nothing else and don't usually have a time conflict.

Re: how come bn ebooks are more expensive than hardcovers?

You know, I admit, sometimes I feel like the price of an ebook should be lower than the price of a paperback. But I think I understand the price floor. Ebooks are in demand. Paperbacks can be overstocked, and sold at reduced rates to clear out inventories. But, as I think of it from the author and publishers point of view, cutting the prices to a ridiculous low would not be very much incentive to continue providing services. The price of an ebook is, in the end, going to be what the masses are willing to pay for it. Obviously they are making enough sells to justify the rates. Also, I rather pay for the ebook because i literally destroy paperbacks. In the end, I am willing to pay for them.

Re: how come bn ebooks are more expensive than hardcovers?

The ebooks in general are much cheaper than paper back, unless there is special to get rid off overstock.  For example, my paper backs are $25 plus S&H; where as same ebook is $4.99 total cost.

I don't know how far our complaint about ebooks being more expensive is valid with rare exceptions.  Most of the best sellers in ebook format are under $10.  Happy reading everyone.
