Given today's technology, this certainly sounds like a workable model. It'll be interesting to see how things shake out.

The issue becomes how to attract the attention of browsers? How do you help consumers cut through the clutter and identify books of interest from multiple sellers? This is why buyers for big box stores, malls exist now, expanding the old general store tradition. Is Google search the model for the future? I like the analysis of the problems with the current system, but the middle man between author and reader has to meet the needs of both. The e book model will evolve away from the current system but I don't see how this addresses how consumers identify the books they want. A step but really a very small one.
