BONEYARD is good (they all are), but it's an atypical entry in the series, more of a thriller than a melancholy detective novel.
If I were you I'd start at the very beginning (THE SINS OF THE FATHERS) and just read all the way through. Although each novel stands alone, they tell the continuing story of Scudder's life, and events in the later books will have much more resonance for you if you've read the earlier ones first.
That said, if you don't have the time or the inclination to do that, my favorites would have to be A STAB IN THE DARK, EIGHT MILLION WAYS TO DIE, WHEN THE SACRED GINMILL CLOSES, and maybe A LONG LINE OF DEAD MEN.
