Are we starting the February selection yet?

Dear Board Members:

According to the Announcement Board, this month's selection is Tokyo Vice.  When do we start?

Re: Are we starting the February selection yet?

Read it RIGHT NOW Redcatlady. Don't look back. If I twist my ankle or fall and injure myself in any way, do NOT stop. Just go. Go without me. Save yourself.

Seriously, though, I'm rooting around my office at the moment trying to find my marked-up copy. I have a pristine copy and one with lots of highlights and dog-ears, and the HELPFUL one isn't here. For now I'd say, just go, see how it grabs you, come back, talk. Because it's more narrative than anything, a lot of the more "discussion"-oriented info is going to appear almost by happenstance.

The book is something easily knocked off on a lazy Saturday. I had hoped it would get a little bit denser information-wise — I learned about it from a discussion on "Fresh Air" that I think, retrospectively, had more "big issues" discussion about the book than the book had itself, painting it as more of a journalistic ethnography — but for the most part it stays a breezy part-thriller, part-memoir, part urban-anthro. I'm very interested in seeing what you and others take from it, because being a little more familiar than normal with Japan made some of it less shocking. I'm also trying to get someone I know who's a journalist in Japan to answer some questions about the opacity of public services in Japan.

You know I keep running into references to this book in nearly every magazine I read. I've read 6 subarticles on it in the last 3 months.

Can you post any links to those subarticles?

Off the top of my head the biggest and best was from Maxim. My Blender sub got changed to M when B went under, so it comes to my door. Check their web and see if it available. It was a couple months ago. But in send of a 1/3 of page hey this is coming up that was in Spin 3 months ago. The Maxim article was a 8 page bit, nice pics too.

I'll see if I haven't recycled the others yet and get back to you.

This interview from Fresh Air is pretty good, but I'll warn you that it spoils a lot of the more frightening/amusing/salacious details you get to toward the end of the book.

It's really a good and fast read, so I'd recommend diving right in. Part of the reason why discussion of the book has appeared in so many media is because the story makes for a gripping tale. Unfortunately, this immediately spoils some of what makes it a gripping read.
