What do you visualize when you hear the term "Gothic" literature?

when i hear, gothic, the first thing that comes to my mind is, the kids at our school who dec out in all black, i myself where black occanisionally. But i think gothic also means like, old/historically with a little bit of "great beauty" somethign like that.
