Re: Welcomes & Introductions

Hi everyone, Just wanted to introduce myself - I'm Karen and live near Buffalo, NY.  This is my second time in "First Look".  I loved "The House at Riverton" and am looking forward to reading this one.

Re: Welcomes & Introductions

Hi, I'm Jesse. This is the first time I'm participating in a book club online. We just started one in our office last month, but I'm sure this will be a completely different experience. I'm looking forward to reading the Sister - really interested in any new fiction these days. I've read a bunch of classics (dickens, dumas, greek plays, etc) and a ton of fantasy, but somehow I missed out on modern and contemporary fiction. So, now I'm trying to catch up.

Re: Welcomes & Introductions

Hi, I'm from Oklahoma and this is my first online book group.  I was in a book club with some friends but had to drop out because of all the pettiness that went on (you know what happens when you get 15 women together?!).  I'm anxiously awaiting this month's book and can't wait to discuss it!!  It's windy & chilly here in Oklahoma this morning with snow & ice expected tomorrow, we have a major flu epedemic going around as well, hope everyone else is doing well!  :smileytongue:

Re: Welcomes & Introductions

Greetings
By way of introduction I am a early 40's father of four who has spent hours under the "reading light" daily/nightly since I can remember. It helps that my job as a minister requires much reading as well. There is not much I don't read but must admit that this is one of the first books of this type (fiction by and for the female, or so I assume) I have maybe ever read. Apart from much non-fiction of any kind (Present at the Future, Flatow and Schulz and Peanuts, Michaelis the most recent) it is mostly historical or outdoor adventure fiction with a Grisham or Creighton sprinkled in when they oblige. I also enjoy reading about other things I find interesting... like coffee or backpacking or canoeing.

I am looking forward to spending some time in an area of reading I am not as familiar with but enjoy analyzing anything so this ought to come easy.

Hi pf, I am in Oklahoma too. If you think a group of 15 women can't get weird, oh nelly! You just joined the biggest club in this whole B&N group of bookclubs! It was so large last month, you couldnt keep up with all the posts and read too. I am in one of the February ones in here now, The Jewel Trader and its a shame more people arent in there. It turns out its a really good story and book and the author is here all month, not just on a Q&A thread but for anything. I love talking to the authors that way. Everyone is in here waiting for March when there are other clubs going on and only maybe 4 of us in there with an author willing to talk to us everyday! Doesnt make sense but there ya go. I have some of the biggest plans going on Sunday and I sure hope we dont get the snow or ice down here to hinder driving. I am just south of OKC so guess we will see how far down it dips. Its very very windy here today and cold so its heading in.

I read almost all of the first book in that trilogy. It was not a bad book and I'm not squeamish when it comes to that type of stuff but I just couldn't take it anymore. The main character in that book is truly demented and evil. I did hear that the other books in the trilogy were not so crazy as the first and much better plot wise.

Re: Welcomes & Introductions

My name is Barb and I come from the Chicago area. The Sister will be my second First Look book. I really enjoyed The House At Riverton. I look forward to discussing it with fellow readers. There is something exciting about reading a book that has not yet been put on sale. Looking forward to getting my book so that I can get started.
Looking forward to my next book!

Yes! Like I said, trashy trashy trashy, but an excellent read. The second one was so so, but the third one, now that one was good!

Re: Welcomes & Introductions

Hi!
My name is Jenn and my husband, two boys (Justin, 2 and John-John, 8) live in Northern VA.  I started reading young and have pretty much had a book in my hand since then.  We go to the library at least once a week, and my shelves at home are overflowing with books that I need to read.

My favorite authors are: Patterson, Piccoult, Stephen King but I'm always game for reading books by other authors.  I'm a member of an online book club, called Pageturners, that has been together for about 5 years.  We started out after Oprah started up her book club again and have been going strong ever since!

I've participated in a few of B&N book clubs and got a little overwhelmed.  I hope that I'm able to keep up this time!

Question--has anyone received their book yet?

What part of Oklahoma are you from, I lived in Durant for four years.  I live in Amarillo, Texas now and we are expecting the snow and ice from this same storm.  Hope that it spares you a little grief.  Happy Reading

I have never read any of Allison Weir's books. Will have to try them. I love Phillippa Gregory's books.

Re: Welcomes & Introductions

Hello:
My name is Barbara and I am from PA. What a wonderful surprise to receive my copy of the book today:smileyvery-happy:
I am a wife and mom to 3 grown-up kids and reading has always been an important part of my life.
My husband and I made it an important part of our children's lives as they were growing up: filling the house with books, trips to our local library and many hours spent reading to them and with them.
This will be my first online book club and I am looking forward to being a part of it.

Re: Welcomes & Introductions

I'm happy to report that UPS just dropped of my copy of The Sister!  Has anyone else had their copy delivered as well?  It's a nice looking book...it's a good size for a paperback (about the size of a normal hardcover but just in paperback).  I immediately stuck a new bookplate on the inside cover (I love doing that!).  Anyone else use bookplates?  I recently ordered some from the artist 'Felix Doolittle' (he has a great website) and I treasure them!

Re: Welcomes & Introductions

Luvs-

Bookplates are little stickers that you put inside the cover of your book to identify that the book belongs to you.  Sometimes they say..."from the collection of.."  or "from the library of" and then your name.  The ones I got have my last name and then address and a cute picture of books and a pot of flowers.  I always used to write my name on the inside of books so if I lent them out, people would remember to return them when they are done (I hate asking for books back so I though it may help with that!)...but I also hated to write in my brand-new books so the stickers were a good alternative...plus, I've had a thing about stickers since I was a kid!

Regarding bookplates: for those of you who would like to use a variety of different bookplates, I love this site. www.myhomelibrary.org/

They have free downloadable bookplates of all kinds.

I think bookplates make it a little easier to keep up with my books. I have several friends who borrow books, so it reminds them who the book belongs to. I hate asking for a book back, but I will if I have to. I only keep my favorites, so I hate to lose them.
