Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

What were your favorite books as a child?  Did you like picture books?  Early reader/ chapter books?  Novels?  Classics?

Re: What Were Your Favorite Books as a Child?

I think Horton Hatches the Egg is one of the most profoundly moving books I have ever read.

I am a bit of an idealist, by nature, and often the ending line will spontaneously pop into my mind.  "It should be, it should be, it should be like that!  Because Horton, he sat and he sat and he sat.  It should be like that!"  If only it was a just world!

Heidi!  Oh, I remember reading that book more than once when I was a girl.  Do young people still read Heidi, I wonder?

Re: What Were Your Favorite Books as a Child?

You don't hear many people discussing Heidi these days. But it is a fun classic and has been made into several films. I had two versions as a child. A condensed, picture format and the actual book. I loved both. Maybe we could start a few discussions on children's classics and see what memories surface?

Re: What Were Your Favorite Books as a Child?

[ Edited ]

When I was little I remember sitting and reading with mom and my little brothers. Our favorite books to read were the Little Critter Series by Mercer Meyer. My brothers and I would always compete to see who could find the mouse and the spider first (they are on every page).

As I started to read on my own I remember loving all the Amelia Bedelia books by Peggy Parish then anything by Roald Dahl and Dr Suess!

Re: What Were Your Favorite Books as a Child?

My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George.  Most definitely my favorite of all time.  I loved this book so much that 15 plus years after having read it for the first time, I still could replay the book over and over in my head.

I definitely intend to buy the book at a later date and read it to my son every day.  Everything that the character goes through in the book reflects everything I believe in today.

Jacki, your signature line at the bottom of your post is absolutely fantastic! Check out the children's musicians Trout Fishing in America for their song "Count on Me." I think it is right up your alley.

Re: What Were Your Favorite Books as a Child?

I can't remember all of them tonight but I think my top favorite was The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Next was probably Little House in the Big Woods.

But my very favorite subjects were Arthurian legends and super heros. Hey! Those are still my favorite subjects. Only now I prefer to rescue myself (or others).

Re: What Were Your Favorite Books as a Child?

I go back into the late 1940's and 50's.

The 100 Dresses

The Secret Garden

The one about the peddler and the monkeys who grabbed his caps (Is it 100 Caps?)

The 5 Chinese Brothers

Little Women

The Nancy Drew Series

Alice in Wonderland

As a teacher in the 60's and 70's I discovered a whole new set of classics:

The Snowy Day

Where the  Wild Things Are

Mr Rabbit and the Lovely Present

The Snowman

The Sneetches

Green Eggs and Ham

Is there club for children's books here?

Re: What Were Your Favorite Books as a Child?

I'd totally forgotten about Pippi Longstocking!  Gosh!  Did I love that book!  I think there's a way that we love books, when we're children, that is so intense, so wonderful.  I'm not sure that feeling is ever the same, once we're grown.

Re: What Were Your Favorite Books as a Child?

I was an avid reader as a child but what stands out the most are the Richard Scarry books along with Judy Blume and the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary.  Dr. Seuss is a given.
