I'm looking forward to reading both books sometime during this month Paul. I bought Aftertime (Aftertime Series #1) because of your blog review about it. Then, I pick up Rebirth (Aftertime Series #2) because it looked like an interesting/entertaining sequel.

It appears that the NookBook version of the third book in this series, Survivors, is free right now.  Now I'll HAVE to buy this book! :smileyhappy:

I don't think Survivors is the third installment – it's a related novella.

[ Edited ]

I'm just starting this book today Paul. I read a few UFs that have been in my TBR pile for quite some time because I was apparently mistaken about previously buying this book or the first copy is lost somewhere in my house. (Unfortunately, that's not a completely unknown event for me. I blame gremlins and/or my husband who's likes to squirrel loose objects away.) I looked everywhere and gave up on May 11 when I ordered a copy on-line. It was finally delivered today. So, I'm FINALLY beginning this book. Note, I'm putting off the sequel to the entrancing The Greyfriar (Vampire Empire, Book 1) to read this book.

Re: AUGUST FEATURE #1: Rebirth by Sophie Littlefield

[ Edited ]

I finished this book yesterday. It reads fast and is one of the most character driven narratives I've ever read. This story is dramatic and emotional as Cass finds herself abandoned by the one man she trusted enough to love. Her decisions and actions after that are neither logical nor emotionally balanced, but they are completely consistent with her damaged character. As an essentially self-destructive survivor, Cass is a fascinating paradox. She hates herself, is fueled on rage and makes abrupt, often ill-considered, decisions.

I also found Dor, the leader of the trading community in the Box, to be an intriguing and complex character. He turns away from everything he has built at the Box to go after his teenaged daughter who was taken by militant Rebuilders. He is ruled by logic and has built walls around himself, but he can't deny his love for his daughter and/or his attraction to Cass. In many ways he is the opposite of Cass. Like magnets each is attracted to the other.

Words like passionate, dramatic and sensual come to mind when I think of this story. As a reader I was completely caught up in the story as Dor and Cass, with three-year old Ruthie in tow, travel across a zombie and bandit infested landscape to reach the Rebuilder Community at Colima. Their trip was fascinating and visceral but sometimes hard to read. Likewise the latter portion of the book, when Cass uses her femininity to endanger all of them, was compelling but difficult to get through. And, the finish, (when Dor, Cass, Ruthie and others escape the Rebuilders), was superb in terms of action and suspense.

IMO, the only time the book lost forward momentum was the mid-book recounting of the characters' arrival and processing at the Rebuilder community at Colima. IMO, it just took too long for Cass, Dor and Ruthie to be processed and too long for the adults to figure out exactly what was occurring. (After the description of some of the activities at the clinic and the knowledge of mandatory sterilization, I immediately knew what was going on.) But, the characters are bombarded by different stimuli when they get to the Rebuilders and don't twig to what is going on until Dor forcefully questions a Rebuilder. Note, the time spent describing the individual Rebuilders and the operation at Colima was necessary to establish that reality of that post-apocalyptic community, but it just wasn't as compelling to me.

Note, although I couldn't relate to Cass, she is totally believable and quite fascinating. I did find her to be internally inconsistent about her kid though. If she loves Ruthie so much why take the chances she takes? Even if you can rationalize that she went to Colima to seek out a more stable future for herself and Ruthie, then you run up against her inconsistent behavior while there. If Ruthie is the most important thing, then Cass shouldn't have endangered her while in the Rebuilder community. Instead, Cass does just that.

I guess I have a hard time understanding parents who put their young children at risk. I know there's that whole bit about Ruthie telling Cass to do what she did, but Cass didn't concede to Ruthie's earlier request about the boy, so I don't see why Cass would change course at that point. It just seemed totally inconsistent to me. It was necessary for the plot, but do I actually think that a parent would do what Cass did? The answer is no, I don't regardless of what Cass' heart is telling her do. But, Cass seems to be ruled by her impulses and passions, not her head. So, I suppose it is internally consistent for her character.

Re: AUGUST FEATURE #1: Rebirth by Sophie Littlefield

@dalnewt:

I finished reading Rebirth today and was so caught up in what would happen next that I immediately bought Horizon and read it in a single day.  My comment on the third installment is on that thread, but having come back to read the Rebirth thread, I found it raised a question for me that I didn't realize had not really been resolve by the end of the trilogy.  What was up with the plot line regarding Ruthie's dreams/requests?  Once Cass fulfilled her request regarding Smoke, that entire plot line just disappeared.  I kept expecting some additional precognition (or something else regarding the birds), although I did get so involved in the action in Horizon that I didn't realize nothing else came of this plot line until I read your comments here.
