You may ask one question of the poster below you. You can answer only the last question in the post, and not one before it. Even if it's the best question ever. You must ask a question when you answer one. And all the questions have to be book related. Clear? Let's go!

The worst book I ever read (forced to in school) was The Mayor of Castenbridge. I can't even remember what it was about, but I remember having to keep reading parts over because it would stick.
My question- Do you prefer authors the same sex as yourself?

Not really because I like books by both sexes.
What is it about a book that makes you want to read more of that author?

Character development - if the character/s are in several books and I really like them, I'll buy the entire series.
Did your interest in science fiction grow out of reading comic books?
(This is a great idea lady_hockey!

Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos series. I could read them over and over and over.
What other genre do you read the most of, and why?

Paranormal Romances because they come the closes to fantasy and I love and wish I had some of those talents.
If you where caught in an alternate time when would it be and why?

Since most of my reading material has a Sci-Fi bend to it I'd have to say, Game Supplements (be it video games or DnD books)
EDIT since it took forever for me to come up with my question I'll answer Toni's too...
I would want to live in a futuristic time since....well, I like air conditioning :-)
When reading, do you need absolute silence or do you enjoy background noise (i.e. music)?

Either. If the book is good nothing distracts me. I have noticed though the older I get the easier it is for my attention to be diverted.
My question is:
Where is your very favorite place to read and can you read in a moving vehicle?
(I hope that doesn't count as two questions. That's one of my favorite places to read on a long trip.

When I was 13 I read the first Harry Potter book and it got me hooked on reading. Ever since then I am rarely without a book. It also started my interest in the Sci-Fi/fantasy genre which has become my favorite genre. It sort of set the course for my future as I am now studying in college to be an editor.

I'll have to say mixed because a good story will never be just one element, really. It should draw from a few archetypes because reality isn't one thing, but many things happening at once.
Ok, my question: Some say that the science fiction of today leads to the innovations of tomorrow. We have seen this with cell phones (look at Star Trek communicators) and the internet (look at what Gibson wrote in 'Neuromancer' back in the 70s) to name two of the more prevalent ones. So, what would you like to see come true that is being made in todays science fiction stories when it comes to next generation innovations?
But I will take money for it.

The transporter. Oh, and the replicator. (Okay, so I'm a bit of a Star Trek geek, but those things would be so useful!)
Question: In the same idea, what do you hope never comes true from a sci-fi or futuristic novel?

I hope never to see nuclear winter or direct mind control.
Have you read any alternate history novels?

Not yet. I've had so much to read yet and haven't come across anything like that.
If you read both Sci-fi and fantasy, which did you start reading first and how long until you started dabbling into the other genre?

What a great thread idea...
My answer: I started reading both sci-fi and fantasy at a very young age. As soon as I was old enough to read a novel, I did. I'm fairly certain I started with Robert Heinlein's "juveniles" from the '50s, so sci-fi would've been my starting point. Though in short order I also had some Andre Norton, Madeleine L'Engle and "The Hobbit" under my belt.
My question: If you wanted to "convert" a non-sf/fantasy-reading friend to the genre, what book would you buy them and why?

I'd have to say either The Belgariad by Eddings or Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy.
Either of those are good enough reads that anyone who likes books will enjoy them, I think. Hobb's characters are some of my favorites and Eddings writes such an inviting tale that keeps you in.
Also, they are both serial so it will get people into more than one book and by the time they are done, they should be hooked.
My question: If you could only have one sci-fi/fantasy book to read for the rest of your life, which one would it be and why?

If you spend the day with one of your all time favorite fictional heroes, who would it be? Any genre.
