I need help with the Dunes series!

Can anyone please advise me as to what the proper order is in this series? I'm very confused. My son has read "Dune", "Butlerian Jihad", Machine Crusade", and "Battle of Corrin". His birthday is coming up and he has told me he wants to read all the books in the correct order, but I have no idea where to start.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: I need help with the Dunes series!

The order of the books as far as chronology goes is:

The Butlerian Jihad

The Machine Crusade

The Battle Of Corrin

House Arteides

House Harkonnen

Houe Corrio

Paul Of Dune (still due out)

Dune

Dune Messiah

Children Of Dune

God Emperor Of Dune

Heretics Of Dune

Chapterhouse Dune

Hunters Of Dune

Sandworms Of Dune

The six books after Paul Of Dune were written solely by Frank Herbert the rest of the books were written by Brian Herbert (Frank's son) and Kevin Anderson from talks with Frank and notes and outlines that Frank left behind.  He had planned on writing the novels before his illness and death.

My son and I have all the books except the new one coming out.  According to the Publisher it is due out Sept 16, 2008.

Yep, it looks like Toni is absolutely right. I for one am really looking forward to Paul of Dune. This Dune series, by the way, is a huge part of contemporary SF. What do you guys think about starting a general discussion thread? There is literally an infinite number of topics... Maybe we could all get together and have a spice party.

Sounds good to me and will give me a reason to reread this series.  It has been a long time since I read the orginial six books.

Re: I need help with the Dunes series!

Thanks so much~ this is exactly the info I needed! Now I can go birthday shopping for my son!

Something that confuses me, though.....how can one of the books in the middle of the series not be out yet, but the ones following it in the chronological order are already out? I, personally, am not into these novels, so I feel totally clueless!

Re: I need help with the Dunes series!

The orginal six books were written by Frank Herbert many years ago.  His son was acting as his assistant.  After Frank was diganoised with cancer he had other projects that he wanted to finish and was doing research on the books his son, Brian and his friend Kevin Anderson finished.  It has taken so long because both men had projects of their own to do.  From what I have heard Paul Of Dune is suppose to be the last book or it could be the first book in the last trilogy.  I guess we will just have to wait and see.  I know that most of the material they used was from things he left behind.
